Hey guys,
Recently got myself a Focus ST170 and really enjoying it so far, just wondering if any of you have any advice/experience about any modifications or tips to get the best out of it. Its my first vaguely sporty car (last car was a M reg 1 litre Punto!) so I've no idea about what kind of things to do. Induction kits, exhausts, remaps, etc?

Now don't get me wrong I'm not a boy racer, so have no urge to add any neon lights etc but anything that makes the car more powerful and fun to drive would be good as long as it doesn't cost the earth. Thanks

I had bluefin and k&n typhoon and only gained extra 1bhp. Not worth tuning n.a. You can get a supercharger have a look on the ffoc site. Guy called evilbat has charged his. Some vids on you tube.

Mine is a 2003 so I guess an early one. 1bhp for both a remap and induction does seem a little disappointing, although I guess it sounded really good with the induction?

Its mainly lower down the rpms that would be nice to improve, it pulls really well once you get over 4500 or so.

But its only 1bhp if his made stock power to begin with, unless he had it dyno'd before the mods on the same dyno as afterwards we will never know

I had a Bluefin on my focus. Not an ST170 but similar results.

Little real power gain, BUT, it allowed it to rev higher, and increased the overall response and low down power.

hmmm, better low power is tempting. As is a slightly meaner noise that an induction kit would give....

Thats because you had an induction kit! Standard box + mods = win

How you work that one out?

Induction kits draw in more hot air as they are open (unless it is a closed induction kit of course) but most of them sit open the engine bay drawing in loads of hot air.

Where as a standard box and pipe draws it in from the grill/bumper which imo is a much better combination.

Supposedly the manifold on the 170 is good, so id consider a sports cat and full system and an induction kit (with cold air feed, dont bother otherwise - check out Simota), then leave it be.

Remaps dont make much difference without a turbo from what people say, and once you get into cams etc you have to be committed as it adversely affects useability.

IMO at least.

Remaps are worth it on a N/A depending on the state of tune, cams etc they need a remap to bring the standard map to bring everything else in with the ecu. You won't see any BHP increase but the torque will have a more steady figure and sort any fueling problems.

N/A can be worth tuning, but be prepared to spend a lot of money doing so.
