Just brought a nice Mondeo ST24 98-Reg tonight from the auctions and to my surprise it would seem as the head gasket has just about given up, the normal issues of engine over heating and no warm air through the blowers.
I brought the car to sell (a little hobbie of mine) question is should I put it back in the block in a couple of weeks or have a go at doing the gasket myself in my spare time? How tricky is it?

Better check the plastic water impeller hasn't gone if your getting no heat through the blowers

If it has gone its possible that the head has warped causing HGF.

bit harsh?

Well not harsh either you sell as a private person OR as a dealer, not as a guy who's pretending to be private, so no guarantee etc and I doubt the profit is being taxed etc although I have no proof of this just a sense

Well apart from the sig thing should have that left out but in for a penny in for a pound!

It was a simple question about a head gasket, I didnt intend any wannabe inland revenue employees to speak their mind and for your information I dont earn enough from it to pay tax. Every buyer is shown the full purchase history of the car and the fact I am neither private nor a dealer, keep your opions to yourself please. I'm not interested in your unhelpful posts.

I would put money on the water pump having failed causing the head to become all warped.

You could break it for spares (does it have RSAP?) or just whack a new engine in it. My mate is selling a brand new Mondeo V6 so let me know if you're interested.

You can't skim the head either you need it re manufacturing, IE not £50 more like £150. TBH I would break for spares, i reckon you will easily make your money back plus some

Theres plenty of "new looking blue coloured water" in the raditor.
Whats HGF? Headgasket.....???
Headgasket Failure.

Turn the engine on, wait for the temp to get warm, don't let it over heat. Then touch the radiator fins in several diffrent locations (top, bottom, left and right), it should all be warm. If not you have cooling problems.

O.k thankx will check that tomorrow
one way to check for HGF is mayo in the oil filler cap (water + oil, turns white) along with other symptoms. But if it's just overheating and no hot air, that generally means a cooling problem. Which if left and the engine overheats for an extended time can give HGF, but if the engine doesn't overheat to much, doesn't do much if any damage.

The engine started to go into the red(over heat) after 3 miles. I checked for mayo and nothing the oil looks clean and fresh no white gunk.

Could be a bad sign, of changing the oil for new stuff to hide any signs.
Did you carry on driving after 3 miles?
Anyway check the rad and see what that's like.
