It's certainly usable for storage. For a HD flick you're looking at about 2.3 GiB per hour of content. That comes to about 0.654 megabytes per second whilst playing. Any drive can handle that.
You'd probably only reach your limit at some crazy file running at 150 GiB per hour which would take the transfer rate to 42.67 MiB/s. No such file format exists, nor will it exist for quite a few years.
