Stage 1 upgrade - advice please

Stage 1

I would like to upgrade the PC in my sig, not enough cash for a graphics card and a bigger SSD yet. I would imagine i could make do with my 660 for a couple of months whilst i save up.

I have a corsair 1000w power supply which should be ok?

Are all the parts below compatible?

If you're doing this for gaming, I would do your upgrade the other way around: GPU first. And overclock your CPU. Your second upgrade should be the SSD.

Fair point, i was concerned the new GPU's would not be compatible with my old Gigabyte Mobo - Gigabyte GA-P55-US3L. I have done some research with no definite answer if the PC will boot. At least this way i have a PC albeit with a not so good GPU. I am basing this on the assumption the new mobo's can support the old GTX660 GPU?

I had an i7 860 @ 4.0ghz . In my build log "down sizing i7 " .
Found moving from 1st gen CPU to 7th gen scores me 15fps average going to an i5 @stock ! Less cores and only slightly faster speed. Gen one i-core would see a health up even if you went to Devil canyon i7 4790k .
I found both with both 980ti and 1070, you get healthy gains with DX12 on Gen 1-2 cores then is states with gen 4 and above .
Personally I switched to new Mobo and core - was gutted as I had that chip since launch date, over 6 years ago !
Ultra board is a cracking board as used one in the past but try to push Aorus K5 for £162 for the extra m.2 slot which comes in handy later on as well as better VRM count

K5 does look nice for a few quid more.

Don't buy an i5 cpu. Either go with an i7 7700K (Or wait for Coffee Lake) or a Ryzen R5 1600/X build. The i5 is bad value for money now that Ryzen is on the scene.

Depends how you look at it. If it wasn't for the rush of coffee lake coming in.
And i5 7600ghz like mine at 5.1 or 5.2Ghz with 4000hz ram can't be matched with a Ryzen at single core performance . But luck of the draw on that one and most do 4.9.

Personally looking forward to i5 8400

60% performance boost from the 7400. More boost an any in the new line up. Intel has to nail the price though

A Ryzen R5 can pretty much match an i5 for gaming. Anything multithreaded it will destroy it. No point buying a 4 core/4 thread cpu anymore when you can get a 6 core/12 thread for the same money.

I would give the same advice, 4 core / 4 thread CPU's have no future proofing and are starting to struggle with more recent games. Choose the best combination of price / performance and look at Intel & Ryzen.

To the OP, I had an i5-760 running at 3.8Ghz with temps below 60c running BF1. The only drawback is even at that speed it would not come close to maxing out the 280x card I had. Unfortunately you need to do a full upgrade and probably best to wait until then.

I appreciate all the feedback. Going to do some research and costings for the Ryzen. Which i imagine will be a different socket to the LGA1151 CPU's.

AMD am4 socket

You are a gamer. Get a gamer's CPU. Wait for Coffee Lake i7's in October, get an 8700K. It's a 6 core 12 thread i7 for the same price they are currently asking for the 4 core i7 7700K.

You do not want to go the i5 route. Those CPUs have had their day and it is now over. Major bottlenecks in heavily multithreaded games like BF1 etc with an i5. You want at least 8 threads. More is better, obviously.

While Ryzen is a good choice, gaming performance is still better on Intel right now. Also, the 8700K will probably hit 5Ghz while the Ryzen chips can't manage much over 3.9 to 4.1. IPC is very similar.
