Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl vs Stalker call of Pripyat...

I bought soc when it first came out and couldnt play it because of performance issues and bugs. Just got it again with the 2009 mod + latest patch and WOW what a difference. This game rocks! Very atmospheric.

Only thing is the travelling takes a long time.
 
Loved it, but damn it was buggy. Also had to get a fair few mods to get it the way I liked. :D I think I got fed up of it in the end because when you walked back and forth through different zones, the enemies respawned, and it all got a bit tedious.
 
Thanks for the info in here Tefal. I have just started playing CS again and had to start from scratch. For some reason when I upgraded to 1.5.10 (Fileplanet seemed to think this was newest patch), my old savegames wouldn't work. Think it worked out for the best though as I have paid a bit more attention to playing it properly and absolutely love the atmosphere from the sound and lighting.

In case it happens again, is there a way around the mismatch of savegames to client version?
 
Bought it during the steam sale for £1.39

Played a lot more than a LOT of games that I bought costing £35!

The thing is it takes some time investment to 'get into'. I'd say it's only a little while after you get past the first railway bridge it starts getting really good. From there better and better.

Like -EVERYONE- says .. install 'Complete 2009' mod. Get used to carrying 8 healthpacks around with you! Be careful after a while about how much you carry (try not to exceed 50kg). Regularly save but try to not ALWAYS 'quicksave' or you could have a 'save then .5 of a second later die' nightmare .. meaning every time you load you immediately get shot in the head!!

You don't really want to make enemies of EITHER 'duty' or 'freedom' either. You'll know what I mean later on :)

I am just crawling the streets of Pripryat (in SOC) at the moment.

I bought stalker shadow of chernobyl on steam and when I installed it there was no location for saved games.

It was just not possible to save at all. I ended up having to get a hard copy.

complete mod came out shortly after so i re did it using the compete mod and the sound mod only.


Don't use any ballistics mods they're screwed if you do any upgrades. (ie the one i used if you used any upgrade unscope/iron sighted they all became laser guns with pin point accuracy but scoped they will never hit the centre of the cross-hair and will make a perfect circle around it.)
 
Er, is this game set in the 1980's or something? (genuinely interested to know) its just Pripyat has been safe for years and is currently a tourist attraction

it's set in 2010-15 i think.

but it follows an alternate time line some time in the early 2000's a huge blast was emitted from the destroyed reactor and everyone in the 30k exclusion zone died, and it was filled with strange anomalies and mutants.

The anomalies produced artefacts with amazing properties and so people started to go into the zone (now very very deadly of course) to acquire these artefacts to be come rich, the government sealed the zone but people continue to sneak in to gain fame and fortune.

one good thing is that the game devs are actually based very near to the zone so large areas are actually modelled directly after it from their own explorations.

I've finshed CoP a few times. The best mod imo is Ceanos mod - Call from Pripyat v4.2. It contains Hi res textures, the atmosfear mod and a whole host of sensible tweaks. Like the complete mods it leaves the main storyline alone.

Its the closest thing to a 'complete' mod and it really makes the game as it should've been :)
 
All this recent talk of Stalker has got me wanting to play through it again, for the 4th time. It is such a chuffing good game!

I've just registered on the forum specifically to say thanks for this - I was tearing my hair out trying to figure out why this game was running like a slideshow even with all settings turned down to minimum and with dynamic lighting turned off.

I turned EAX off, and the game now runs perfectly smoothly on my 9800GT with dynamic lighting off but everything else maxed out - THANK YOU!! :D
