Hi all

I have a 720i HD TV and was thinking Blu Ray players sell for £250+ on ebay and you can get a PS3 for £300.

My quesion is why would you buy a stand alone Blu Ray player over a PS3 which is a games console and a Blu Ray player

Thanks

Maybe superior DACs or transport, the usual audio/video-phile things.. or operational noise as the PS3 can still be quite noisy. Other than that I have no idea, particularly when you take into account that the Blu-Ray is still very much in it's infancy with confirmed updates to the standard on their way during the course of this year. The PS3 will be easily updatable but will a standalone player ? Your guess is as good as mine buddy !

ps3 all the way. The only downfall is lack of dts-hdma output, but that will be resolved shortly (though decoded onboard and output as uncompressed pcm much like dolby hd)

I have a standalone BD player, but only because I bought it prior to the PS3 becoming available in the UK. I really struggle to understand why anyone would not chose a PS3.

its ps3 all the way, i own both formats, both on my 360 and ps3, the only reason not to choose a ps3 over a blu ray player was if you are interested in the look of your system, the ps3 aint much to look at, its a bit funky, some people may prefer the more plainer, simpler, traditional look of a normal blu ray player, but the ps3 has a million advantages over a normal player, such as being a superb console, media player, internet browser, wireless capabilities built in, etc, etc. you can even fold on it

oh really? i didnt realise you'd had it that long lol

I bought a Samsung BD-P1400 because of the PS3's lack of bitstreaming ability for every sound codec. It's nice seeing DTS HD Master Audio lit up on my amp

Amazingly, the Sammy BDP1000 is a year old now. It's been given the latest firmware updates and as a result has never had an issue playing any BDs. It's dog slow on start up, but I spend that time turning on the projector, amps etc, so it's not really a significant issue.
It's also still the only region free (with SD-DVD) BD player that I know of. So I can't really grumble too much about it, though it would have been nice to get a free games machine thrown in. I've seen some comments about how rubbish it's meant to be for SD-DVD, but I ran a dem against a Denon 3930 and Marantz 7001(?) SD-DVD players last year, and on a 720p 42" Pioneer plasma couldn't tell any difference, so I've no idea what the complainers were comparing it with.
