Stange Speed\Duplex Setting Problem

I was wondering if anyone here has seen this before....

My built in nForce network controller on the DFI board is set to Full-Autonegotiation. Now, on some threads on the net I have seen forcing the speed can solve little network niggles. So i set it to force 100 FULL. However, the router cable test page shows that I am only connected at 100 Half? Strange!

I've double checked I didn't accidently select half and it still says that. If I set it back to auto, it connects as 100 FULL. WTF?

Ignoring the full auto-negotiate and force options, there is another choice which is "Auto-negotiated for 100FD". I set this and it won't connect and says that the cable is unplugged..... but its not?!

Grrr! Any ideas? I know its not a "major" problem, but why can't I force the connection speed?

Thanks!

I have an Intel 955 motherboard.
It has onboard Intel GB NIC.
My PC is then attached to a Netgear DG834GT ADSL Firewall/Router/Wireless AP.
This unit is also my DHCP server for all of my PC's.

99% of the time my PC would be switched on, get an IP address from the DHCP server, be locally connected at 100mbs and all would be well.
Occasionally for some unknown reason I'd fail to get an IP address from the DHCP server.
Friend of mine suggested I set the card to 100mbs/fd
That is all my Netgear Router/Switch can do anyway so it should be fine and may fix the other issue which could be an auto-negotiation problem.

When I set the card to manually 100mbs/fd I too find my PC boots up to a "No network cable attached".
However set it back to Auto and I'm back to the 99.9% of the time it auto negotiates to 100mbs/fd and very, very occasionally fails to get an IP address at all.

Sorry - not a fix for you, but you're not alone with the strangeness of NIC's :)

Wow, I thought I would be the only one. :D Thanks for posting your problem as well, hopefully we can figure this out. :) It's a bit of a strange one like!

What router are you using? Is it firmware upgradable?

I'm using a D-Link DI-624 (Rev C) router connected to my D-Link 300T ADSL Modem. The firmware is upgradeable, yes, but the modem hasn't had a new release since the stoneage along with the router. I'm currently running v2.70 which was released on the american site, and some european sites, but for some reason not on the .co.uk website. The latest version on there is 2.59b3!?

I had nothing but bother with earlier revisions for the router, this v2.70 has been quite stable (touches wood) and has improved performance. Please don't say I have to down-grade the firmware. :p
