There is no game to play yet mate. Wait until is properly released and not this Alpha 2 planet game.
If you have to play Space game have a look at X4 Foundations if you want offline.
 
Does this still exist, I thought this was now a white elephant and will never "actually" be released, how much money did they manage to get and still not give any final game to play?

It does exist in an Alpha stage the last 3 years with 2 planets and you cannot do anything serious except menial tasks/missions which are designed for time grind.
The company got and spend over $250mil-300mil, but there are people who still fund the pyramid scheme.

As for actual release depends which game? The originally planned game from 2012-2016? Never.
A new dumb down version (i wrote this knowingly well is double negative sorry :D ) might be release in the future.....

Oh so the original game has now changed to a different? easier? not the same game? I was at one time following this, but it was taking so long I stopped as I was a huge fan of the Wing Commander games. $250 - 300 mil is a huge amount of money and still no final product however, ok so game still does exist but release of a final product is still unknown ....
 
Check back in the next decade.

People are so invested now they have no choice but to keep throwing money at it and in the meantime the devs keep reworking the same old mechanics. As time goes on it doesn't even look that impressive visually.

It's amusing to watch from the outside though.

Yes. From a MMORPG like EVE Online is now more like an MMOFPS. No big battles, just a score of ships would be allowed to participate in a sector and if that is full, everyone else will be on queue even to travel from A to B crossing that sector.

Is bonkers, considering EVE has thousands of players per side battles since the early 2000s!!!! with sever & client tech from the late 90s!
Hell anyone played the original Planetside, 17 years ago, had bigger battles in Galaxy class ships (with players controlling the aircraft turrets). Some might say different game, scope etc. However we talking about 17 years ago! With tech from 20 years ago and barely scraping ISDN 64kbs lines in most countries when everyone was connected through PSTN and modems.
