The complete online adventure which is the main game and every expansion is on Steam for £15! Have I missed this boat on this game or is it still worth a blast?

I would say you have missed the boat. I tried a free trial a few years ago, and it kept me amused for a few weeks but by then it was already in terminal decline. I would suggest if you are interested look out for a free trial.

Even putting aside the whole "sony ruined my game" thing, it's not great. It was designed as one type of game, then forced into being another type completely, and it's not the better for it.

Boring classes, boring quests,, and boring worlds since you can't do half the stuff you used to be able to in them.

DON'T DO IT, please. Utter waste of moolah now! SWG was once a game from the gods, now it isn't worth the discs the games are burnt on to :(

what did they do out of interest ?

total dumbing down.... to quote wiki:

"Another major update called the "New Game Enhancements" (abbreviated as NGE) was implemented on 15 November 2005, and created huge demonstrations in game from the majority of players, and became available in retail on 22 November 2005 as the Star Wars Galaxies: Starter Kit.[39] Major changes included the reduction and simplification of professions, simplification of gameplay mechanics, and Jedi becoming a starting profession. Media outlets such as CBS News, New York Times, New York Post and Wired Magazine criticized the reduced depth and complexity of the game.,[40][41][42][43][44] but John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment, defended the decision claiming it necessary to revamp the game in order to reverse the deterioration they were seeing in the subscriber base.[45] SOE offered refunds on the Trials of Obi-Wan expansion due to it being released two days before the NGE was implemented.[46] The development team affirmed this was their desired direction for the game and that they would modify parameters to address player's concerns.[47] Features such as expertise trees were later added to the game to add complexity and differentiation to characters. After the announcement that SOE had acquired the game Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, Smedley addressed that game's players about the perceived threat of major changes to the game:
We've learned a thing or two with our experiences with the NGE and don't plan on repeating mistakes from the past and not listening to the players.
—John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment[48]
Subscriber numbers were originally expected to exceed 1,000,000.[49] In August 2005, SOE reported that they had sold 1,000,000 boxed copies of the game.[50] In early 2006, unconfirmed reports showed that only 10,363 subscribers were playing on a particular Friday night, but Smedley denied that subscriptions had fallen this low.[51]
Updates such as the Combat Upgrade and New Game Enhancements prompted a few small groups of players to develop server emulators which would allow for play in a previous version of the game. Different groups are currently attempting to reverse engineer versions of the game that would predate the Combat Upgrade. Although none of the emulator projects are completed, some are running public and private test servers with communities forming in advance of an emulator release."

As above, although its also how they went about delivering this NGE. There was hardly any warning that they were going to do something that drastic.
Every few months they'd revamp two classes, Squad leader and Ranger were promised some groovy updates but instead NGE removed them. 32 classes down to 9 smelt like they were hoping to mimic WoW.

Remember how creature handlers got screwed? If they bought the "Trials of Obi-Wan" they got an exclusive item, however only days after that was released the NGE removed their class completely.

Nice one :o

I played the collectors edition on release day, as well as played the beta. The game had so much potential, and had one of the best crafting systems ever, but was screwed over by devs who were constantly undecided on how jedi should be implemented and refusing to listen to the players.

The game was so unballanced, with classes such as creature handlers leveling ultra fast and being super powerful if played right, while other combat classes had trouble even with max skills. And for such an advanced game it took months for them to implement a working chat system, I remember when my guild had to run IRC for guild chat because the guild chat ingame didn't work 90% of the time.

In the end I played for about 4 or 5 months and gave up when the game was still so broken, and because proper town features weren't implemented my guilds housing area was overrun by extractors when we got an ultra rare deposit spawn on us, and half the extractors were just left there idle long after the deposit was gone, ruining our town layout. And as well as all that, the collectors edition gave 3 ingame items, which was unique eyewear (the only eyewear ingame) and like many players from time to time I got an inventory glitch when dragging and item and I lost it, except I lost my collectors edition item and a GM said it was impossible to return unless I delete my character and start from scratch, so I stopped my subscription.

I just wish some other game dev would play SWG and look at the amazing crafting system and use it in their own game, it was great.

I tried it back at launch, didn't think much of it back then.

I am quite sure the changes Sony made met with hostility from people who liked the game, I never managed to find it fun, and I love SW, saw A new Hope at the cinema when I was 12 :)

I hear the crafting was the best ever, but I really dont play a game to craft.

I never played SWG, but even I hate Sony after hearing what they did to it, and thus wouldn't touch it with a 10ft smelly stick.

You all say hold out for SWTOR... SWG in it's current state (which is not 'dead' as so many make out) is a better game than a star wards themed wow clone.

Anyone who's 'holding out for Old Republic' in the hopes that it's going to be another classic SWG clearly hasn't read a single thing about TOR. It's got WoW with lightsabers written all over it in big ugly letters.

Not just written all over, they've said as much...
