Star Wars Galaxies

Wow is basically the beheamoth of mmos, and if you look at what there doing with swtor thats a bit ludicrous to suggest. Fair enough there are a lot of similarities but good ones. All the good aspects from wow, just take alook at some of the screenplays and character interaction, its nothing like wow (oh look a quest, SPAM ACCEPT NEXT NEXT) and to suggest its going to be just like wow with lightsabers is daft and deluded. Anyone that has played KOTOR will realise this, not to mention its BIOWARE!

Not to mention wow has been going down hill since wotlk.

Sadly, it already seems that the SPAM ACCEPT NEXT NEXT has been integrated into TOR - the Bit tech review here was less than impressed by the demo it played.

And WoW has got rid of a lot of the "fill up your quest log, grind quests endlessly" in Cata by just giving you 2 or 3 at a time to do - a minor change, but does change the pacing of quest grinding.

Anyway, everyone knows that WoW has been going downhill since Vanilla/TBC/WOTLK/Cata - funny how the subscriber numbers keep going up though.....

OT: Played SWG since release and as people have said, it had one of the best crafting systems I've seen in a game - the only downside, if you were a successful crafter, it became something of a second job :)
I'd love to see that emphasis on player made equipment in TOR and there are indications that there is a similar sort of crafting system.

The CU ruined the game for me, a lot of us went elsewhere when that came out. It was incredibly frustrating that huge amounts of the game were broken, they'd claim to have fixed it - only to find the same game-breaking bugs were still there.

So they have gone downhill have they because Dragon Age 2 wasnt quite as good as other game sequels. Lets ignore other masterclass games they have released since 2008.

You can't just look at games in isolation though. They've gone downhill since they've been taken over by EA. Its' really obvious DA2 was rushed out in a completely unfinished state, something the old Bioware would never have done, their own games were masterpieces (KOTOR 2 being the exception, as it wasn't made directly by Bioware).

You can pad the quests out with as much scene setting and polish as you can bear, but at the end of the day it still boils down to "Kill 5 flesh raiders".

Either way, I have high expectations of SWTOR and look forward to playing it, it can't be any worse than what wow is in its current state :<

I have high expectations of SWTOR

I think this is where people quite often go wrong with MMOs, their expectations. They go into an MMO with "high expectations" and that causes problems when things dont live up to their expectations. I have to confess that the MMOs that I have enjoyed the most over the years have been the "surprises" , the ones where I didnt have any expectations when I went to play them. I find that with low or no expectations the findings can only either be pleasant or expected, whereas with high expectations the findings can only either be disappointment or expected

Thats most definetly true, the reason why I have high expectations is just because of how long this game has been in development. Wow has been the only real MMO ive played in the last 5 years, i had a few stints on the likes of AOC and Warhammer online but ive never been grabbed by anything so much before a game has been released before like this.

Good mmos are not made on their slightlg different and not very original way of picking up quests (and you are still just running in the direction of the arrow on the minimap) they are made with solid content and enjoyable social experiences, ive seen little indication that the game will offer either.

I used to play galaxies around 2003/4 and loved the game it was then. I'd quit long before NGE but I reactivated using a free month after they implemented these changes and it was terrible. Everyone was hanging around Geonosis, the rest of the galaxy was desolate and the class changes were terrible.

I dont know about that one really. I started playing WoW since day one for about a year, stopped and then came back when WOTLK was out for some time. The game was of course very different from the vanilla version but I did not see any features that I really, really missed while found many useful among the new ones (better UI, more features etc).

But on Galaxies, I played it for a few months after stopping with the original WoW. It was ages ago and even then it was considered to be past its best. The two main points that made me leave it where the constant grinding schedule(and I thought WoW was bad...) while the atmosphere of the game as a whole did not feel very SW-like. Not to mention it was charging me more per month...

SWG was great, loved it with all my heart being a real SW fan. played Beta and on the US servers on release. I was a pre patch 8 Jedi when you could lose your Jedi if killed 3 times. SWG was a broken game when it started it needed another year of development, it was trying to copy UO carfting system and did it better, most of the interface was borked and the classes where very unbalanced. after leaving SWG on mass with my guild to play WOW beta our 1st comment where "WOW this systems works" I will never play another SOE game again, Yes still Bitter

SWG became dead to me the minute it was revealed how you opened the Jedi character.
We were promised (wish I'd kept the forum posts now) that the path to Jedi was going to be very difficult.
That it would be different to everyone.
That it would by mystical, difficult and force you to look for things away from the beaten track.

Once it was revealed that all you had to do was master a set of pre-determined skill trees (4 of which you could actually find out by collecting certain objects) I walked away.
