Starbucks olive oil coffee...

A Tim Hortons opened in cardiff and thought I may as well give it a go as since it's seems well thought of over the pond. Pastries looked decent to be fair but the coffee was same sort of level you would get from a machine at a services.

It's not actually fair to group the entire world's Starbucks under 1 level of coffee "ranking", there are really bad ones in train stations where they just make it as fast as possible for the commuters in England. But in countries like Italy or Japan. In order to successfully stay open and not lose money in Italy, it can't be crap, it has to be decent or the locals will not go. These Italians are not Americans (shock horror), our dislike of Starbucks and the way we look down on it here magnified by x 1000. Yet they succeeded.

This is a piece from CNBC on that part.

And then, there are Starbucks call Starbucks Reserve. It's the size of a library or town hall, with it's own roasters in the building, offering more than just coffee, some serve alcohol, and you can get all kinds of methods of brewing there, Espresso, filtered, Aeropress, V60, siphon, cold brew, Nitro Cold Brew etc.

I imagine they are franchises right?
Therefore can get different qualities in two branches in the same town let alone regional offices.
Some people really slate dominoes, in US it's a bit of a joke I think, my local branch is pretty ok to be fair.

They are not franchised...according to Google.

But like anything, local staff and their attitude affect a lot, especially when the staff has to create the item to order. So Italians working in Starbucks making good coffee isn't a shock. I'd expect if you put a staff from a really bad Starbucks from around here to work in that store in Italy, the coffee will be crap. It varies so much depending on who is making it.

I guess I am trying to say is that the people here working in Starbucks don't really care about making a good shot of espresso / coffee, especially those in busy locations.

huh, interesting would have thought so as a lot of food/drink places are these days.

Wait....in the UK is franchised! I guess in some countries you can't? The UK seems like you can, which certainly explains a lot.

For UK tastes it will be beef dripping and beef dripping with crispy chip bits, just like Nan used to make.
In some area's it will be duck or goose fat.

:D <----- Added to show the above was an attempt at humour.

I'm not a fan of these pretend coffee houses and try to avoid as much as possible.
Scraps if you are a northerner :p

When I initially heard about it (before I knew it was olive), I assumed they would be using something like MCT oil.

Their dark roast coffee is nice.

I find Starbucks coffee weak. Used to work for a call centre where they had a Starbucks there and was very cheap. Talking 2005 prices a Venti Americano with 2 shots was £1.70.

Think many coffee chains are more geared up to lattes - or wimp coffee as I call it.

Have my coffee black and strong with a splash of milk.

Most coffee chains are more interested in serving people iced milky drinks with flavoured syrups, shaving foam on top and sprinkles for good measure. Then they wonder why people who like "good" coffee don't go there.

I also wouldn't take an American's judgement on food stuff, at all. They don't really know what actual flavour is, unless it's an obscene amount of sugar or salt (or both!) :o

Going to be interesting to see how this does, sounds rank! :p

That's because it is. I'll wager that the higher up's in that firm thought it was a good idea after a night on on the lash. ;)

I thought that too. Fine for cooking italian invented food, but definitely not Italian invented hot drink.
