Starfield Upgrade Advice

what i plan on doing is getting something fair, reasonable price, till nvidia 5000 series, then im going to splash out big on a new set up and oled screen

The game is CPU heavy, and like Fallout 4 seems to scale with RAM frequency. So if you get 32GB of DDR4,make sure it is as fast as you can get it to run at(with decent subtimings). So DDR5 systems with higher speed RAM are significantly faster than DDR4 systems. However,in your case I would be looking at the graphics card first as that is probably the bigger bottleneck currently IMHO.

Something like an RX6800/RX6800XT/RX7800XT is what I would look at,and you should be able to get a free copy of Starfield from retailers supporting the promotion.

Does anyone know how futureproof a RX 6800XT is likely to be for 1440p gaming? These generations of cards seem to be very minor improvements compared to the last so in theory could last a while, although if Starfield is anything to go by, it won't last long (But this may be exceptional circumstances and improve over time)

Not exactly a science when predicting future proofability (its a word , check the dictionary) of a card but the 6800xt is a good card and has a decent sized frame buffer. It will not become unworkable overnight and it does run UE5 Fortnight quite well with software RT. As long as you have sensible hardware RT expectations I do not think you would be disappointed.

I personally would wait and see the benchmarks and price for the 7800xt before I purchased. Timespy is not a good indication for judging RDNA3 , the 7900xt/xtx do better in actual games than in that benchmark when compared to Nv. If you compare the 7800xt to the 7900xt/xtx scores then you may get a better indication of its performance and even then make sure you are only looking at the graphics score.

Well, now the reviews are in - It looks like the 7800XT is pretty much a 6800XT performance wise so I'm going to keep an eye out for cut price 6800XT's as they were going for £441 a few days ago so in theory will drop even lower to clear out stock. I have considered whether it's worthwhile getting something like a 3080Ti on the MM for a little bit more (But without Starfield)

I was just reading some reviews. 7800xt does seem decent in comparison to the 4070 and it does have some improvements compared to the 6800xt but i agree, not enough of an improvement. £50 lower msrp and it would’ve been a lot more interesting.

A used 6800XT would be a tempting option as it should still have a warranty and would be much cheaper.

I do like that AMD hasn’t skimped on the VRAM like Nvidia did with some of its cards.

So by this at least 16gb should be ok to start off with but who knows real world whether it would be using more. Would be interesting to know.
