Starforce

So has anyone here actually had any major problems with programs/games which use Starforce copy protection?

Yep, to cut a long story short I installed GP Legends, got BSOD when launching the game, after a few goes this changed to 'NTOSKRNL is missing or corrupt' and in the end I had to rebuild my pc.

This turned out to be a known problem with the version of Starforce that shipped with the game, after the rebuild I updated to the latest version from the starforce website and it worked fine. I didn't have any 'copying' or 'cloning' software installed. I'd also installed games that used starforce before without a problem.

Has made me think twice about any future software titles using this protection.

Ah well, now both my drives are fubar'd and I've no idea how to even get around this. 3 reboots and they still recognise no media, yet they're fine in Knoppix. I tried uninstalling the drives and letting xp detect them again but as expected that didn't do a thing.

These stories just highlight what a complete disgrace Starforce is. I cannot believe that people can have their computers completely trashed in the bid to stop game piracy. What's worse is that it's the people who buy the games that are being punished.
I was reading a lot on Starforce or should that be starFARCE in a bid to get silent hunter working, it seems a common problem for Windows installations to be ruined by these ridiculous drivers. It also appears that many people have been threatened with legal action over comments they have made about the drivers.

After installing starforce my pc now burns cds at about 4X.. it takes about 12mins to burn a music cd when before it took around 2-3mins.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

The Cd writer is a Liteon 52X24X52

The only Starforce game I have installed is splinter Cell.
The only problem i've found is that Alcohol now wont burn CD/DVD images correctly everytime, 1 in 4/5 mess up & it used to be perfect. Everything else is fine...
