I've just finished watching all 10 seasons of SG-1, and I've started the first season of Atlantis(does it get any better?)...so my question is, does it matter if i start watching SGU without finishing Atlantis?

I have noticed there is an ideal way of watching them all, as some sg1, sgu and sga overlap. I never got into sga until I was stuck in the house for a fortnight unable to go out. So I watched them all.
Every. single. one.

Fully enjoyed it!

I'd disagree I think SGA at its peak is better than SG-1.

SGU was the weakest but deserved more than the quick cancellation.

I think SGA hit it's peak for the most part at the end of season 3 when they really started to change the cast around.

Coincidentally i was running through the first season of SGU on Blu Ray yesterday and it really does flow better as one big piece watched in a few long chunks. 20 odd episodes in 45 minute chapters on a weekly basis gets frustrating.

It makes me wonder whether they'd have done better if the show was condensed into 6 to 13 episode seasons/mini series.

I agree I think the 20 episode season killed SGU with the sort of format they were going for, if it was 13 episode seasons they could have cut out a lot of the filler and then the season would have flowed better.

Oddly enough out of all three I enjoyed SGU the most, SG1 and SGA always felt like written for 14 year old kids that never grow up and the tone of series themselves age rather quickly. Where SGU has gone wrong was to go back to SGA filler episodes where star gate is used for short story arc scenography change device. "Captain, we need oxygen/ore/food/herbs/toilet paper, there is a planet nearby we can try and find it", glup-swoosh, "Oh look, another planet that looks like Canada, with pines and lakes and everything" "Let's hope marine/scientist/goofball/romantic couple don't get lost in forest/mine/hole/cave before energy runs out/portal closes/ship has to move/enemy arrives." Even the viewers had enough of planet explorations across 500 yards of Canada's forests/caves/mountains/deserts going on for decades. Bit of a shame, because at their peak, each SG series had rather good long story arcs. Maybe as someone said - if they done shorter but higher budget runs, instead of 5-8 long arc episodes with filler inbetween?

Enjoyed and loved them all, however SGU was by far the strongest as far as I'm concerned.

Deffo stick with SGA as the Wraith really are a nasty bunch and well worth a watch. :D

Sadly Vancouver's/Toronto's scenery kind of goes hand in hand with Sci Fi nowadays, seeing as almost every show out there is filmed there.

You can skip SGU altogether. It's nothing but a soap opera. Bunch of whiny bitches stuck on a space ship.

The best thing about SG1/SGA is the fact it is cheesy and upbeat. They just laugh in the face of adversity, not go all weepy then stab each other in the back as soon as a problem comes up. SGU is just boring above all else and none of the characters are likable.

SGU was great, I really enjoyed it. Wasn't perfect by any means but it was great to see the Stargate universe (excuse the pun) presented in a darker, edgier and more dramatic way. It was far more character-driven than SG1 and SGA, but unlike kwerk I liked many of the characters and there are some episodes that are really quite good purely due to character interaction.

SGA is utter crud start to finish, the enemies are rubbish, most of the cast are significantly worse than SG-1, most of the stories are rehashes of SG-1 episodes.

The reason, IMHO, some people liked SGA more at one time is because the last few seasons of SG-1 are particularly terrible, while SGA either improved a little, or just seemed to improve in comparison to SG-1.

SGU is very different, there were some good episodes but ultimately it was full of too many poor cast members and far too many filler eps with very little going on. Season 2 was far stronger story wise but still entirely predictable.

Sg-1 is by miles the best, SGU second, SGA is just terrible. If I was going to rewatch anything, it would be SG-1 about up to SGA starting, post the attack on earth finale. Everything with the new guy and the Ori is dog****.

I actually quite liked the last few seasons of SG1. It was a loss when O'Neil left the show as a regular but I thought Mitchelle/Vala were pretty good and I liked how the show became more 'serial' rather than episodic.

Regarding SGU - I think this will be my cup of tea having read bits about it. I loved BSG hopefully it's a similar vibe.

I'm half way through S2 of Atlantis and it still hasn't grown on me though. I find McKay really, really annoying! I feel Ronin Dex is underutilised as a character as well...

The last 2 season of SG1 were not that good, they had a couple of outstanding episodes but the ori threat took far too long to materialize and Vala while a good quest character never really work as a full time character.

As for McKay I liked him but by season 5 he had become really annoying and by season 5 and because of consequence of his actions I kept expecting Shepard to put him in his place instead he kinda just walks all over him.

I loved SGA but thats just because I know out of all the characters I would probably be as annoying as McKay :D

SGA probably had more potential than most sci-fi shows, prolly more than SG-1 even but its mostly squandered, it starts so-so, gets quite a bit better but then quickly becomes mundane.

SGU you _can_ watch at any time seperate but a few things make a bit more sense if you've watched SGA before, theres several things they did that killed all its potential tho.

Mckay as a character actually showed some genuine growth if you look at his character from his very first appearance in SG-1, through SGA and then in his final appearance in S2 of Universe. He did mature as a character.

The problem i found is that his egotistical side was used far too much so this growth wasn't shown consistently and it just didn't..stick. The whole Keller/Ronon/Mckay storyline was painful to watch tbh and didn't do any of the characters any favors. It felt very childish.

I agree that Ronon was underused as a character as well and I think his character suffered the same as Mckay. His character had some genuinely good episodes, especially the ones that featured Sateda but he was portrayed as a brute and thug and well, a bit crude allot of the time, nothing like a trained soldier.
