The PEXSAT31E1 2-Port PCI Express SATA/eSATA 6 Gbps (SATA 3.0) Controller Card adds one internal SATA 3.0 (6 Gbps) and one external eSATA 3.0 (6 Gbps) port, through a single PCIe slot.

Providing simple connectivity between a host computer and SATA 3.0 internal and external devices, the PCIe SATA/eSATA 3.0 adapter/controller card offers a cost-effective solution for connecting high-speed storage, such as High RPM Hard Drives , Solid State Drives (SSD), and external storage arrays, which in turn allows for easier data backups and archiving.

With full support for SATA 3.0 hard drives and data transfer speeds of up to 6 Gbps, the adapter card features a native PCI Express single chipset that provides enhanced compatibility, reliability and performance for external SATA 600 MB/s storage needs.

The controller card is backward compatible with SATA 2.0 devices, providing the versatility to use older storage, and features support for RAID 0 and 1 modes as well as port multiplier capability with command-based and FIS-based switching for connecting multiple external hard drives to a host PC through a single external SATA connection.

Suitable for installation in slimline or small form factor computer cases, the PEXSAT31E1 offers a dual profile solution, including a low profile/half-height bracket for easy installation.

So are these Startech cards the next generation of SATA?

If I bought one of these I would have to seek out a new solid state drive which would boldly give the performance boost I need to take my computer to levels of performance it’s never been before.

Asus do a sata 6gbps and usb3 pci-e card for around £22-25, this is a rip-off tbh! You can get a Lycom sata 6gbps pci-e card for £18.

Don't you have a spare PCI-E x16 slot you can use? It most likely runs at x8 speed so that would give you the same bandwidth as PCI-E x4 on v2 of the bus.

The cards are PCIe 1x so they'll run in any size of slot albeit limited to 1x speeds (250Mb/s on rev1 & 500Mb/s on rev 2 slots)

1x isn't nearly enough for 2 6 Gbps SATA ports though (assuming maximum throughput on both). You'd need a 4x card to run up to 2 6 Gbps SATA ports or up to 3 USB 3.0 ports without a bottleneck.
