Putting a flag for a short time is a way show you have secured an area. A flag is usually put up for a short time, or longer to show two things. Reduce the chance of blue on blue (friendly fire) in case of lose of radio contact.

It also shows to any surrounding pockets of resistance that you have secured an area and not to like, come try take us out cos we'll 'ave ya.

Not being rude but some of you guys need to take your heads out of the sand with ya little theories!

Its like, thy put their flag on the moon. It doesnt mean they own the moon, it means they conquered the area, like the many British Flags that have been placed in palces like Mount Everest or the North Pole.

US forces seize airfields in Western Iraq

US forces have seized vital airfields in western Iraq as the assault on Saddam Hussein's regime was stepped up.

The airfields known as H-2 and H-3 were taken without much resistance from Iraqi troops, US defence officials said. However, they said Allied control of the installations was still "tentative."

The airfields are important partly because Saddam Hussein is believed to have Scud missiles there.
