Started pulling bits of the MX-5 . .

It's a nice idea to break it Kitchster- it does make sense if you have the time and space to do it as good complete cars are not expensive.

Plus you're not driving around in a car that's had a bad crash and been repaired by you - it's just not worth it imho. You have paid £200 for parts and need more anyway plus it'll need pulling straight so there is maybe £200-£400 plus a bag load of your time. I've got experience of having a MK1 stripped when ours was resprayed and the garage gave me a large pile of oxidization from the bits that had been replaced. There is much more to do than you might think

Have you had a browse on PH/autotrader? These cars are so cheap now... (I was looking how little mine is now worth the other day  ) Then just transfer the best bits from your old one and sell the rest.

Hi guys, thanks for all the input, I do appreciate where you are coming from, and yes breaking it/getting a new one is certainly a possibility.

Just to be clear, I am lucky enough to have someone we know very well who lives down the road who used to own a car body shop. He fixed my clio after this happened:

Before I'd started stripping it, I asked if he'd take a look at it, to see what he thought. From an initial inspect he said it'd be pretty darned expensive, but possible to repair it.

What I am doing now, is taking off as much as I can, to get a better look at what's going on and go from there. I am *not* going to be doing the 'serious' repairs myself if I do go ahead, and I won't have that done if it's going to be a dangerous wreck afterwards.

I've got a few more bits off today, but I'm home alone so I can't easily roll it out the garage to take a few photos. Watch this space :)

I'm only 3rd party. Insurance company would just immediately write it off anyway :)
Undoubtedly :(

It sounds like you're going about it by the most sensible route, doing as much as you can yourself to save costs and gain experience, then leaving a pro to do the 'heavy stuff'. As I said above, best of luck with it, and keep us up to date with progress :)

Andy.

Mate, that is Donald Ducked. By the looks of it, you are going to need a new inner wing, some major straightening, a new rad, new pipework, new pop-up and lid. Hope you get it sorted and good effort on stripping it, can't help but think it'll be a scrapper but you never know...

I'd have put it a bit more subtly lol, but with 25 years experience behind me, I'd be inclined to agree.

Of course anything can be repaired if you throw enough time and money at it, but does this car have such a tight grip on your heart? It might be an idea to step back and think with your head for a minute, rather than your heart. For the same amount of investment (both ££'s and graft) you could actually end up with a much better car than you had, as you could plough some of the saved expenditure into upgrades and modifications (of the performance variety hopefully ;)).

Just one guys opinion, but I felt I had to say it :)

Nah, that's fine I get that. I'm doing it very slowly over time, and I haven't really committed to anything. Yes I got those other parts but it's not like I can't sell those on too; it's merely because at that stage I'd been told it wouldn't be too bad, and I'd seen them cheap.

I'll take the other bits off, and see what he says. Since the day I crashed it I have been scanning the usual places for a fitting replacement ;)
