I am buying the Canon 550d tomorrow, comes with the standard 18-55mm lens for 500 quid which I thought was pretty good. I am new to photography so not sure about other equipment I need or will come in very useful. (apart from a fast SD and Bag).

Are there any other vital pieces of kit I need to get started?

See if you can get it without the kit lens and buy a 50mm f1.8 instead

or if your budget allows buy the 17-50mm tamron

if you getting it from jessops haggle on the memory card, when i got my kit form there, i got a 4gig card for 15 quid.

i also second getting the 50mm 1.8. i got it on monday and its a cracking lens,

the kit lens is fine, but i agree with dowie, if you can get body only use the money saved to get a better lens.

just looked at the receipt

Sandisk 8GB Video SDHC Memory Card for £15

RRP in jessops is £49

typo on the 4gig

God, Jessops is such a rip-off. They make it seem like you're getting it cheap, but it really isn't. That card is available for £15.99 delivered after a quick search.

Before you buy a 550D, have you considered getting a 30D/40D body second hand, which will give you a better body and more money to spend on glass?

yeah i know, but some times, convience is the overriding factor.

If the OP does want a new body rather than second hand. then he could go for the 450D. it is down in price now the 550 has come out, and i think they have the same sensor. only thing missing will be HD video, and higher iso?

No the sensor is far from the same ;)

40D is the way foward, with as ever, a Tamron 17-50.

Both are built better than the really plastic 550D.

To answer the OP's question - stuff that may be considered vital = lense cloth & pen, rocket blower, spare memory card, spare battery, post processing software. Stuff I find handy on top of this = battery grip (plenty of shooting time plus more sold feel & weight to camera), lens hood (to avoid glare in sunny days with my 55-250) & tripod. Kit I'd also like = remote shutter release, softer neck strap (original rubs on long days out), eye piece extender (to stop nose grease on the screen). I honestly wouldn't bother with UV filters as lens protection if anyone suggests this.

Thanks for the info guys, my problem is I dont have the second choice of the UK. So am still gonna go for the 550d, its £500. I have no idea when the new Nikon will land in Bangkok, we only got the HTC Desire a month ago!

Thanks PieEater thats the kind of info I was looking for
