Making Beef and Ale Pie for a few friends but I'm struggling with a starter. I can think a few that I like but they seem more Italian based and not sure they go.

I quite often make bruschetta with an onion and tomato topping but I'm not sure that really matches the pie? Although it will balance nicely with the heavier pie.

Any suggestions my food connoisseur friends?

I don't think a bruschetta is the way to go. Because the idea of eating bread and then pastry afterwards in one meal isn't very appealing. It's also not very thematic as you're going from something light and mediterranean to something dense, heavy and British.

If you had a theme, that would help determine what would be appropriate before it.

something light as they will need plenty of room left for pie. Something fishy- nice fish soup? mackrel pate? lazy smoked salmon or prawns - interesting salad, some home made breads and charcuterie

If you're going for something like a pie as a main I find soup is sort of standard, french onion. With some good homemade bread.

Though to be honest I wouldn't serve something like a pie if I was cooking for freinds at this time of year. Lovely in the winter, but I always find lighter food is better when it's getting a bit warmer you know.
