Starting as a contract Engineer

So I've been working as a structural engineer for a big consultancy in the offshore oil and gas sector for almost 5 years, graduated 2012 with a MEng in Civil Engineering. My work has been mostly involved with in service integrity for fixed platforms and site assessments for mobile rigs, so verification and assurance. So nothing specifically on design or project engineering, which really has what I've always hankered for.

I've just today been offered a job at a smaller consultancy that is renewables focused and it's a contract role. I'd sometimes thought about going contract but thought it would be something I'd look at later on in my career. But the type of work was exactly what I was after so I followed through and her we are.

So just wondering if there are any other contract engineers on here? Are you set up as a limited company? I have a few questions about timecarding, billable hours, overtime etc. that the recruiters aren't giving me very good answers to.

As things stand I have an offer in principle really - the recruiter has said they'd like to offer me the position and I can see an email chain with their HR confirming so. However, I've only been sent a template contract, no written contract detailing things like hourly rate, minimum fixed term, offshore rates etc.

The recruiter has thus said along the lines of 'can you hand in your notice ASAP so that we can give new employer a start date'. I'm not mad to not even think of handing in my notice until I've received a formal offer though, am I? The other complication is I have a 3 months notice period and obviously the new company want a start asap. I've discussed this with new company and they are aware the worst case scenario is I won't be able to start for 3 months. That's a separate issue, if I put in my notice, am told a flat 3 months, and tell new employer than is my start date, can they then rescind the offer? In which case I'd be totally screwed.

Any comments or advice appreciated!

As a contractor they can terminate your contract/service at will.

They could say that they will wait 3 months for your notice, find someone in the interim then tell you the day you are starting you don't have work.

Going contracting is very high risk initially unless you have established relationships with your prospective clients/employers. The people I know that have been successful (proper engineering) have either got a great existing working relationship and/or are so specialist they are a companies only option.

They also don't use recruitment consultants.

Fundamentally they can't offer you an actual contract because they will almost certainly ask you to be ltd company - and it's the company that will that will deal with the client/agents as regards a contract.

They should at least be telling you the rate/hours though.

3months notice is lol worthy though.
