Starting Oblivion - to mod or not to mod?

Yesterday I picked up Oblivion together with the expansion pack, Knights of the Nine. A search of the forums indicates that the "OOO" mod is probably the best one to install. However, having never played the game before what I'm wondering is whether it is best to start of playing purely the official content (Oblivion+expansion), or apply a mod before I get started?

Also I have never played a Bethesda game before so are there any general tips or advice I should heed? Apart from KOTOR1/2 I haven't really got into any RPGs since the 90s.

only mods you need are graphical and a few AI tweaks iirc? The doodah that lets youa ttack people and only near by guards will come get you, not any guard in the stupid game :D

Sure some people will be more up to date, but i'd get a few major mods fror graphical prettyness, LOD texture pack and such.

What's performance like with LOD increase tweaks? I only have a 7900GTO so am a bit wary about increasing the detail.

Theres a mod somewhere out there that increases the damage on ranged weapons. Its pretty helpful cause as you level up your bows seem to do less and less damage, which is annoying if like me you use bows a lot.

Id also (if your pc can handle it) recommend Open Cities, just removes loading times between main gates on most cities.

You'll want the larger textures to get rid of tiling. Also the natural environments one, and natural water. Open cities and that guard one are good too, but not essential.

Forget OOO, it makes it a tedious game way more tedious (or "realistic" if that's your sort of thing).

You'll also want to read up a bit on the leveling system, it's confusing at first. I hated it myself so when I played through I downloaded a more conventional one, called Balor leveling. You might want to consider it.

Anyone installed the Daerdic Horse Armour mod?

I tried to set it up after getting Knights of the Nine, but the armour stays as the standard stuff(it is supposed to replace the steel armour)

see above threads ^^
wouldnt try OOO straight away as it makes radical changes some of which you might not like. Would try changing bits that you *really* dont like e.g. psychic guards etc. You'll probably spend some time in the beginning tweaking it for your rig. 7900gto should run it fine. I have a couple of screens up on ]this[/B] thread with some graphical mods on (LOD landscape etc) and i have a 7900 gtx so expect maybe similar performance

lots of nice mods out though

open cities? So are they all open now? (thought it was only 1 or possibly 2 cities) ie no loading transition (gothic games did this). Is there a fps hit near the city or anything?

You will get bad stuttering with max settings anyway with only 1Gb ram

It makes the cities part of the "outdoor" world, so you get similar fps as you would outside. With standard citites, the cities are a seperate area, so you get much better fps.

I don't think they've done one for the imperial city though, which is a shame.

everytime i mod the game it ruins something graphically even with using OMM to update the archiveinvalidation.txt

what texture files exactly should i use to make the game look much better without crapping the graphics?

ive had probs like horseman without clothes and doomstones with a big hole in it.

Just want texture and lod mod that guaranteed wont screw something else up.

If you intend to play a Mage definately get a Mighty Magic or a similar mod, as the magic system in vanilla Oblivion is perhaps the worst I've ever seen. 100 Conjuration points to summon a 2 Handed sword for something stupid like 12 seconds??

Mods are what make Oblivion crap to credible.

My advice, play Morrowind, Oblivion is rubbish
Sage advice indeed, and it just so happens I'm selling a copy on the MM :D ;)

Seriously though, I think all of the Elder Scrolls games I've played have their merits, tbh I still look back on Daggerfall with most fondness.
there was something about it's rough, bugginess that gave it charm.
Plus I knew how to exploit the hell out of it to get my stats up without cheating! :D

my user interface is sweet, got immersive interface on there too!

just every gfx pack for lod and textures seems to bugger something up in the game.
