StarTrek XI - ***Spoilers***

Just got back from this!

Vue at Cribbs Causeway, do a 'Mystery Movie' where you pay a normal ticket price, without knowing anything about the film, other than its not out yet and its rating (12A).
They took all our phones off us and blabbed at us about piracy and all that carp because its pre-release.

ANYWAY, Star Trek starts and I am hugely relieved (was half expecting Harry Potter :S, in which case I would have left to be fair.)

So yeah, I feel I lack the necessary vernacular (and memory!) to describe and 'review' the whole film, so I'll just summarise a few things.

Please bare in mind I am a Star Trek fan, but by no means a Trekkie, I haven't watched it since my youth.

Storyline - Great, flowing and fast. There really isn't a break, nor a 'beginning' 'middle' and 'end'. Its just one long showpiece of storytelling. Personally I would have liked a bit more of the academy but it probably wouldn't of fitted in with the summer blockbuster crowd this has been aimed at.

Pretty standard action tbh. Nothing groundbreaking, suffers somewhat from what I like to call "Bourne Syndrome". By that I mean they were to lazy to properly choreograph and create the fight scenes, so they just make so many cuts per second you can't really tell whats going on and just hear grunts and fists thumping. I hate this. It however is not tooooo bad in Star Trek, not distractingly so (QoS I'm looking at you).
Space battles aren't really explored, I feel they're keeping it for more budget and more time in the inevitable sequel.

Acting was across the board very good, Quinto is great as Spock and Chekov for me was a great character. I do think there were a few to many comic relief style moments, similar to Iron Man of last year, only not as good! Particularly annoying at the start. There were lots of nice nods to the original series, lots of the catchphrases make it in and ofcourse the Kobayashi Maru.

The look of the film is nice, lots of wonky camera shots making people look intense and lots of nice space shots. It is however jam packed with artificial lens-flare which seems to be a JJ Abrams staple (Fringe! Jesus its like watching a show through an unwashed window!).

Errrm, thats about all I can be bothered to write right now. In short, I thoroughly enjoyed it and think it could well be my film of the summer, unless McG somehow pulls off something amazing with T:Salvation.

GO SEE IT!

Sums it up really :(

Review

lol @ that.

On a side note i've just got back from the Cinema and gladly report a GREAT film, the visuals are just stunning.

I like that the actors are instantly recognisable to who they are without needing names.

There are some bits that made me think 'well wasn't that appropriate' but i didn't care.

Simon pegs funny as usual but i think he needs to back off just a little on the accent. Good comedy which will be well regonised by old trek fans.

Blah.

I am not too happy about the film's targeted audience. It seems that it's more about action that anything. It's blasphemous to Star Trek Canon, and the action sequences are messy at best. There was some nice humour, that new and old Trekkies will love.

It is essentially a reinvention of Star Trek. It doesn't really hold true to the other films, unfortunately.

It was a good film. Maybe not a good Star Trek film, if that makes sense. Still, worth a watch! And probably a purchase of the DVD/Blu-Ray/desired media format.

WARNING!!! PRETTY BIG SPOILER!!!

Isn't the whole point of the plot device they used? It's set in an alternate universe where things have happened differently.

My first reaction was "lame, more nonsense Star Trek time travelling" but I've come to realise that what they've done is pretty clever. The problem (OK, one of the problems) with the Star Wars prequels was that you already knew the ending before it happened. You knew who was going to survive and who was going to die. There was no tension.

By setting the new Star Trek movies in an alternate universe, the writers start with a clean slate. They can kill off any character without affecting the canon of the normal Star Trek universe.

I went and saw it at midnight and apart from feeling like death today, I can confirm the film is actually rather good.

I'm not a massive Trek fan; I've seen a lot of it but I always find it feels a bit cheesy and unconvincing. This definitely didn't have that effect. It's brash, loud, exciting and best of all, totally unlike any Star Trek that has gone before. It's a total reinvention of the formula; taking all the best bits and adding a layer of sheen that the franchise badly needed.

I'm not sure it's as good as it could have been however, but then Battlestar Galactica has pretty much sealed sci-fi for me these days. Nothing comes close to how intensely gripping that was. This feels a bit shallow and occasionally forced in some places, and after the film I felt like it could have been a lot more involved.

However, you've got to place things in a wider context and the aim of the film must be to bring back Star Trek and kick-start a new story arc. Maybe the next installment will have a bit more depth and a more interesting plot, but either way this is a solid piece of cinema and well worth a watch, whether you're a fan of the series or not.

Saw it earlier.

Think its a steaming pile of crap and the worse ST movie ever. Created by a bunch of TV show morons. You will not believe the plot & story contrivances and juvenille tone. It will insult your intelligence on many levels and is the biggest let down since The Phantom Menace.

Avoid at all costs:(

Agreed! Enjoyed it quite a bit myself. Was definitely more of the backstory etc and now the groundwork has been complete we are potentially looking at some really great sequels in the future.

Went and seen it at 00:01am :p

Just got back from a day to trip to the London BFI IMAX to see it, never been to an IMAX before either.

I'm a pretty big Star Trek fan I've seen all the TV series (except TOS) and all the films so I was a little nervous that it would spit in my face and do it's own thing. As it turned out I think it's probably one of if not the best Star Trek film I've seen - which probably isn't saying much, but it is really really good though.

It is all new and different yet, there is still those TOS film mannerisms, phrases, and characters that still tie it in with Star Trek of old.

If I had only one tiny moan it would be I'd of rather of had the TOS Film/TNG theme music rather than the TOS's camp theme. I guess they wanted to separate it from the negative views of the previous Star Trek films, but even so!

The really bad thing is that after going to an IMAX I can't see me ever wanting to go to the hole that is Bedford Cineworld again. Don't want to pay £50 every time a big film comes out I want to see! :(

Just seen it here in Belfast with a mate (who untill alst week hadn't seen any star trek film!!!) and we both thought it was pretty awesome!

Its funny, very much star trek like just with better done action scenes :)

Admitedly i found the shaky camera thing a tad unnecessery at times and i do still have a mild problem with time travel in star trek (though i still love the voyage home) but the acting of the new cast was brilliant! All of them managed to take their original charaters and take them to new and better levels :D (the guys who do checkov and sulu especially)

But yeah everyone MUST see this! (oh yeah PR. i cant belive bedfords cineworld is still going! that place was a dump when i was a kid 10-15 years ago!)

Just back from seeing it, and I have to say, it's probably the best Star Trek film I've ever seen.

A little background: Ever since I heard about this film, I've been the loudest person to show my disgust. Re-booting Star Trek was something I just did not want to happen. The ship looked terrible, and I felt as if they just took the entire history of Star Trek and flushed it down the toilet.

SO, needless to say, I went into the cinema hall with little to no expectations.

I walked out the cinema hall jumping with joy on how amazing it was.

It was THAT good.
