Just got back from this!
Vue at Cribbs Causeway, do a 'Mystery Movie' where you pay a normal ticket price, without knowing anything about the film, other than its not out yet and its rating (12A).
They took all our phones off us and blabbed at us about piracy and all that carp because its pre-release.
ANYWAY, Star Trek starts and I am hugely relieved (was half expecting Harry Potter :S, in which case I would have left to be fair.)
So yeah, I feel I lack the necessary vernacular (and memory!) to describe and 'review' the whole film, so I'll just summarise a few things.
Please bare in mind I am a Star Trek fan, but by no means a Trekkie, I haven't watched it since my youth.
Storyline - Great, flowing and fast. There really isn't a break, nor a 'beginning' 'middle' and 'end'. Its just one long showpiece of storytelling. Personally I would have liked a bit more of the academy but it probably wouldn't of fitted in with the summer blockbuster crowd this has been aimed at.
Pretty standard action tbh. Nothing groundbreaking, suffers somewhat from what I like to call "Bourne Syndrome". By that I mean they were to lazy to properly choreograph and create the fight scenes, so they just make so many cuts per second you can't really tell whats going on and just hear grunts and fists thumping. I hate this. It however is not tooooo bad in Star Trek, not distractingly so (QoS I'm looking at you).
Space battles aren't really explored, I feel they're keeping it for more budget and more time in the inevitable sequel.
Acting was across the board very good, Quinto is great as Spock and Chekov for me was a great character. I do think there were a few to many comic relief style moments, similar to Iron Man of last year, only not as good! Particularly annoying at the start. There were lots of nice nods to the original series, lots of the catchphrases make it in and ofcourse the Kobayashi Maru.
The look of the film is nice, lots of wonky camera shots making people look intense and lots of nice space shots. It is however jam packed with artificial lens-flare which seems to be a JJ Abrams staple (Fringe! Jesus its like watching a show through an unwashed window!).
Errrm, thats about all I can be bothered to write right now. In short, I thoroughly enjoyed it and think it could well be my film of the summer, unless McG somehow pulls off something amazing with T:Salvation.
GO SEE IT!
