Static Damage to CPU

I think memory is most sensitive to static I've never managed to kill a CPU yet and hard drives well I simply don't bother its a big mass of metal which acts as a very effective ground. The only time I had an issue was a very, very long time ago I pulled out a monitor lead without switching off first there were blue sparks and it killed something inside and the screen wouldn't display after that, this was before locking plugs on monitor leads.

I've only seen static kill something once (RAM). I imagine that if you were holding it by the edges rather than the pins, the packaging of the chip would have insulated the transistors inside it.
