hi
can someone give me a guide that shows how to set up a static ip address in vista as i need it to to open the port for utorrent. ive tried the guide that utorrent links to but cant get it working.the router is a dlink 624+ and im with virgin media
 
Router should do all the work regarding internet connection, all you need to do is forward relevant ports on router to your computer.

Set your IP address on your machine to be a static ip address

IP: 192.168.0.10 for example
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: Router address
DNS: Router address (if router is dns caching server) - If not set to ISP DNS servers

Dont want to sound condersending but are you entering an IP addy within the correct range for your router?

You say it wont let u accsess the net, can you ping the router?
 
im new to this so dont really understand it that much.
at the moment if i leave the setttings on automatic for both my internet works. as soon as i follow the guide it does not. what im trying to do is to setup the port for utorrent as my speeds are not as good as they were when i had it setup in xp
 
Well what I mean by is it in the right range is does it follow the same structure as your automaticly assigned IP.

For example if your router has assigned you 192.168.1.10 and your subnet is 255.255.255.0

then your manualy assigned IP should be 192.168.1.xx where xx is the variable for each computer. Normally this value is between 2 and 99 but depends on how your router is set.

Once you've got your manual IP you can forward the right port.
 
Can you post a the result from CMD of ipconfig/all.

If you want you can edit out your MAC address but doesn't really matter to anyone.

With a 255.255.255.0 subnet you have the range of 1 to 254.

thanks a lot. internets working with those settings.
now how would i know what my static ip is so that i can enter that into my router for the settings for utorrent
 
I assume thats when u enter it into the router settings?

try a different IP addy. maybe the one you were assigned automaticly 192.168.0.103
 
Once that IP address has the torrent port set and forwarded then make sure that any Windows firewall your running is also set to allow it.

You haven't mentioned which router your using.
