Static ip address

Your question isn't very clear.

If you're comparing setting the servers IP using a DHCP reservation to setting it manually on the server then there's no functional difference. If that is the case I'd suspect user error.

The router can theoretically access anything. Any device on your network will only be able to see addresses within its own subnet.

And a router is a router. So it’s designed to look up IP addresses and send/receive traffic to and from them.

What is the IP address and subnet you want to reach? The subnet is the 255.255.255.0 bit after the main IP address (it might be written as a / something like /24 or /32).

if i reserve the ip address in the router folder sharing works fine
cancelling the reservation and entering the details into the ipv4 settings
ip address, subnet, gateway i cannot access any shared folders, but i can remote into the server

Is the IP you're entering manually the same as the one that was issued using the DHCP reservation?

Where are you trying to connect to the shared folders from (LAN/WAN)?

What sort of server is it (Windows, Linux, etc.)?

So you’re entering 192.168.0.136 on the server network card with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 and a gateway (and maybe DNS server) of 192.168.0.1?

exactly that

Is the IP you're entering manually the same as the one that was issued using the DHCP reservation?

Where are you trying to connect to the shared folders from (LAN/WAN)?

What sort of server is it (Windows, Linux, etc.)?

windows w10 pro, no server specific software

And is the router the TaoTronics Mesh unit you talk about in the other thread?

it does exactly the same if its directly connected to the server with cat 5 cable via virgin router, mesh units out of the question

must be because of your beans on toast dave. Only thing stopping it might be the beans.

yes i think thats the issue ;-)

when i enter the above ip, into the server it says theres a problem and that "dhcp is not enabled for ethernet "

ok, let me get this straight.

You are connecting to the Synology from your desktop PC, when you change the IP address of the Synology to a static IP address you cant connect to it but when you allow it to pick up the IP via DHCP you can?

When you say you can connect to the "Server" remotely are you referring to the mobile app / synology account? The reason I ask is you have not mentioned anything about changing the Firewall rules on your firewall / router which is purely because the device is authenticated and or using UPNP.

After changing the Device IP address can you browse to its web front end using https or http?

If I have this the wrong way around let me know, just trying to get an understanding as changing the IP on the synology and trying to access a share on it using \\192.168.0.136 may not work until the NIC is took down and brought up again, the web server runs independently to the SMB / CIFS mount points so it could just need refreshing.

Again if I have this the wrong way around let me know :)

He’s got a Windows 10 workstation he wants to share the files from over a mesh network. Maybe you’d like to reformulate your response?

I think some of that stands he says "Windows 10 no server specific software" and then in the same answer states "It does exactly the same if its connected directly to the "Server", clarity of answers is pretty much key as this is bread and butter stuff.

If it is due to mesh it will be a node not routing or something daft.

Just trying to help out while I rebuild this b0rked UCS but some of the info provided is a little ambiguous
