Lost!
I'm using static ip's to avoid conflicts with print servers, NAS etc however when i set it on the laptops, what should i set the DNS to, should i set it to the gateway, or manually enter some DNS server addresses from somewhere??

It won't make any difference, just set it to the gateway if you're happy to use the DNS servers assigned by your ISP. In fact even if you're not happy with the performance of VM's DNS servers still set it to the gateway, but specify different DNS servers in your router's setup.

And surely it would just make a lot more sense to set the fixed devices, i.e. your NAS, print server etc. to a static IP address outside the DHCP servers range and just leave all the clients on automatic settings via DHCP.

Home, ive tried both directly to the router and to the VM dns servers but not sure which is best or more relaible??

Assuming you are a VM customer then this is the same thing!

Reservations are the way forward and I'd set the machines to the router and then you can adjust all the machine in one go by adjusting the router if need be.
