Static worries when building first computer

before I build I tend to touch a radiator for a few seconds, have yet to kill a component by static, I also wore socks on a carpet floor.

Just have the PSU plugged into the wall but the wall switch not on, thats then grounded to your houses earth. Then just touch a bare metal bit of the PSU everynow and again just to earth yourself. I also tend to wear cotton when building PCs, so a pair of jeans and a cotton tshirt. Also ignore the people who say they've never had a problem and don't do anything, 99.9% of the times thats probably fine, but having been one of the 0.1% who has buggered sometyhing with static its worth a couple of simple precautions.

Don't worry about it. As long as you don't try and do it while wearing an addidas tracksuit, dancing standing in a bucket on some carpet you'll be fine.

LOL!!

When I built mine i just used an anti-static wristband. You can get them from shops for around £3 or £4. Plus when i built mine i used the antec 1200 case so i just scraped a tiny bit of paint off on the frame so i can earth myself properly, you cant see where i did it though because the panel sits on it :) dont worry about it.

I haven't personally killed anything (we all know whats gonna happen next time)

But an old house'mate' killed his motherboard, was chuffed though, didn't like him anyways.
