A couple of weeks ago I was off sick for a working week (5 days) with the flu, or something similar anyway. Upon returning back to work, HR called me in for a chat to check that everything was ok, and asked me for my doctors note. Naturally I didn't have one as wtf is the point in going to the doctors for a simple virus. HR requested that I still provide one, so I popped to the docs last night, explained that I was off work for a week and was told that I can fill in a self certification form.

I've just been to HR to explain this, and they've told me that as I was off for 7 calendar days (including the weekend) then I still need to provide one.

Can anyone help with this? It seems like a massive waste of time to me.

Cheers.

Anything more than 3 days requires a doctors certificate I think.

Personally Ive never known a man to take an entire full week off for flu, few days maybe.

You big wimp :p

I had a pretty nasty flu virus thing last week but only took one day off (the day i was feeling the most ill).:p

You're allowed to self certify for up to 7 days without the need for a doctors note.

They are wrong, you have to provide from the 8th day. Including the weekends/unrostered days is normal.

It is up to your employer to decide whether you are incapable of work for payment of SSP.

Your employer cannot ask you to provide medical evidence that your are sick for the first seven days of illness. During this period they may ask you to fill in a self-certificate of their own design or form SC2.

You can download a copy of form SC2 from the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) website using the following link.

Haha, I've never taken that much time off work before! No idea what it was, but I was bed ridden for the best part of it.

Do I just ask them to write that I had flu symptoms during date x and y, sign it and job done?

I went to work when i had Kidney Stones, went to the Doc's at Dinner and was rushed to Hospital was in overnight Left Hospital at Midday ish and was back at work the same day......

By Gum there's some Wimps around

Sure it wasn't a case of the man flu? I've had the flu properly twice in my life and both times had a 24-48 hour period during which I couldn't stand up.

We have a self certification form which details the dates you're off and why.

That's all you need if you're only off for <=7 days.

Well aren't you a hero, been knighted yet?

If I feel like crap, do 60+ hr weeks most of the time and get sick, then work can go **** themselves. I give the best part of my life to them, I'm not killing myself even more.

Fact: Self cert for first 7 calendar days

On the 8th day you'll need a med cert

They don't sound like they know much

Is that 7 working days? HR seems to think 7 calendar days. Since I was off for two weekends with the working week in the middle, that's 9 calendar days.

This is what I'm confused about, I was ill for 5 days with my usual weekends either side. Still need a note?

*edit* If anyone knows where this is documented, I'd love to know!

I don't know what it was. :p Couldnt stand up on one of the days though. Think my body just got managed to handle it quite well and get rid of it quite quick.

Point HR to that directgov site and remind them it's 7 days and not 8. I would have thought that HR will have a local form for self-certification.

Well the first weekend you were ill means nothing to them so dont even mention it.
I know our place by HR ruling we should call up on the Friday to explain we will be in the Monday otherwise they count the extra days or something like that. Never happens though.
