I'm headed to Dallas next year for the eclipse and staying about 5 days and car hire looks to be £100+ per day. I'm wondering if taxis and Uber are going to be cheaper. Your experiences would be most welcome.

Just general tourism in Dallas.

Dallas is quite spread out so it depends very much on where exactly you're going - it's not much of a tourist city really. I'd probably lean towards Uber / Lyft if you're not planning to move around that much as it's less hassle than hiring a car and less potential for issues with damage etc.

for going out to eat, breakfast or galleria , having a car is pretty, well, useful ..
do you plan to see eclipse from somewhere specific ? into the sun with city in background white rock lake, say.
could you get a car/flight/accomodation package that makes cost more palatable

I was caught out by this when I first went the US. It's not like the UK at all. You need a car to travel from the far side of the car park to the supermarket doors. I mean everything is on a different scale and massively spread out. You use transport all the time. A car is highly advised.

Duration-wise I want to get over jet lag before the eclipse.

Noted.

Depends, I’d say in most US cities I’ve visited a car would be a waste of money!

Bit like UK cities, from my experience, some are like London, 'ing awful, some are ok unless you hit rush hours, which can be an entirely different level of silly from the UK; anywhere near the Strip in Las Vegas, for example.

I use Lyft Transport and I must say, it was an exceptional experience. From the moment I requested a ride, the process was seamless and efficient. The driver arrived promptly, and the vehicle was clean and comfortable, find customer service contacts on https://lyft.pissedconsumer.com/customer-service.html . The entire journey was smooth, with the driver displaying excellent navigation skills and a friendly demeanor. The convenience of being able to track the ride in real-time added an extra layer of security and peace of mind. Overall, my experience with Lyft Transport was nothing short of excellent, and I highly recommend it to anyone in need of reliable and hassle-free transportation.
You definitely work for them

I’d defiantly get a hire car, Dallas is big and easy to travel around, there are some good deals on car hire if you search though

Ubers are generally everywhere though, so they are easy to get around too

Get a car as it allows you to go where you want, when you want. Use quidco and/or shop around on various sites looking for discount codes.

Should I hire the car at the airport, or wait until the next day, when I've had a good night's sleep? Driving unfamiliar roads in an unfamiliar country, possibly at night, when just off a plane seems like a recipe for disaster.

Went Florida in July and opted to use Taxis for the first week.. they aren't as cheap as they used to be and would say we didn't save much, if anything by not having the car. Plus it's the ease of being able to jump in one and go anywhere.

I travel to Dallas 4/5 times a year and I use taxi's. There's loads and there's less chance of annoying an armed local.
Downtown Dallas is all walkable I'd say but if it's hot it's pretty unbearable. There are some bigger malls which you'd need to take a cab to.

New York - Don't bother

Los Angeles - Car is essential

San Francisco - Don't bother

San Diego - Car is essential

Las Vegas - Don't bother

Orlando - Car is essential.

That's about all I've done in terms of cities.

Just to update the thread, I used a taxi to get from the airport to the hotel and got ripped off and then took Uber everywhere else. The cost was much the same as hiring a car but without any of the hassle.
