If it tells everyone on my Facebook how many achievements I've unlocked and how much more sad I am than they first assumed, then I'm not particularly interested

Pretty much this.
I only have one because I have a couple of people on there, including my best friend, who don't use MSN, and I'm certainly not texting constantly while sat at my PC. I did suspend my profile in an attempt to force him into alternative arrangements, but alas, no joy
It's actually a good way of finding people that you know that have Steam, but don't have you added on Steam.

My girlfriend saw it pop up on my FB and immediately got Steam on her laptop... So it actually is working for them!! First time in 3 years she's had any interest
