Sorry but I need to rant somewhere lol.

Bought a copy of Portal 2 (retail) and tried to install on my pc a few days ago.

It turns out the cd key is a duplicate (game was sealed brand new). So im guessing either its been a victim of a serial gen or Steams authorisation server has lost the plot.

Soooo, I entered a support question to steam to look into it as the retailer will not accept pc game returns (as i could have activated and be trying to pull a fast one).

I made it clear it was new etc etc etc. Three days later I get a response telling me i was in violation of their t&c's as you cant trade games / accounts.

Im at a loss for words! I have a brand new game I cant play and neither the manufacturer or the retailer believe its their issue!

Where do I stand here regarding my consumer rights?

Send them another ticket, they never read the first 1.

Take a picture of your retail box with the CD-Key, and write on a piece of paper next to it your steam account name.

This. They can then see that you own the actual game (preferably with the receipt next to it also with the date on it in full view) and see that your steam account isn't the one the game is registered to. Can revoke the game on that account and give it to you then.

This. I did it with EA support and they gave me a brand new key because some **** at the depot has opened the game and stole the key. I could tell because the game manual was upside down when I opened it and also that key was registered on the day of my order.

sorry missed that bit

I did take a photo of the box, cd, key and receipt!!!!

Im really annoyed with the response after waiting 3 days

will put another in

OH and there is no phone contact for Steam!

What crap..surely the retailer should be able to take the return? Where did you buy it from? Pm me it if is a competitor.

The retailer is responsible, but some can be difficult so it can be easier to deal with the manufacturer in practice.

No retailer with a brain would accept a refund on a game that uses a one time activation code.

@OP, just make sure your ticket is direct, to the point, polite and well presented, and you'll get a response.

His contract is with the retailer, and they are responsible. Getting them to accept their legal responsibility can be a PITA but it's theirs.

Well they responded again asking for a copy of the receipt with the amount showing.

The earler receipt had the payment part missing (didnt see the point), I though as long as the date, game etc was showing that would be fine.

Wrong, they are just being awkward.

So it looks like next week before I get my next stupid response.

I would have thought the retailer was responsible here? Goods sold are not fit for purpose and there in up to them????

Unfortunately awkward retailers are another example (along side DRM) where legit customers are screwed over compared to pirates. Seriously, pirate it until you get your response. You should be able to copy over your saves later.

As I said above the retailer is responsible but Valve are probably the easier option.

It should have been obvious that they'd want to see the full receipt though...

to be honest I thought about buying the bloody thing again just to be done with it. However knowing my luck the next copy I bought would be cloned as well lol

Steam tickets are dealt with on a 'first come, first served' basis. If you keep bumping your ticket, that gets it dumped to the back of the line again. I assume you've followed the CD Key Reset Process Guidelines, at which point it is simply a matter of waiting for a reply.

A couple of years ago I bought Left 4 Dead online from the highstreet game retailer which only has 4 letters in its name. It was obviously second hand and the key was used. Went through the above procedure, but also phoned them up and complained. They said they were sorry, and offered to either accept the game return for a refund or they would send a replacement out. I kept the insert that had the cd key written on it and sent the game back for the refund. Technically wrong, but they couldn't have sold on the game anyway, and they shouldn't have the first time.
