Steam : Choose install folder !

You cannot moan about people's posting styles, when you seem to struggle to spell or use any sort of correct grammar. I'd much rather have a couple of separate posts than an entire forum of people making illegible posts.

Wow, at last! Although as others have said I'll use Steam mover until it's implimented properly.

And what the hell is all the fuss about making a new thread, get a life!

I personally like the individual threads to discuss some of the more popular feature changes with Steam. If they were to be all put into one large thread I just feel things would get messy with people discussing multiple different features at the same time. I feel it makes for easier reading and lessens the chance of posts getting missed.

I agree with you, we don't need, and I wouldn't want a thread about every change. But this is not the case anyway. It is just the more important and popular features which get new threads created for them.

Steam does display a changelog, you're correct, but this doesn't mean that just because we are told about the changes that they shouldn't be discussed with like minded individuals on an internet forum.

But mehh, does it actually matter? :)

Actually, looking at it a bit more, I think something like SteamMover or the equivalent in GameSave Manager will still continue to be useful, as with this it doesn't look like it will be able to "move" something that's previously downloaded, only something you download fresh.

And as for the threads - I like having individual threads for exciting new features like these - I rarely look at the all-in-one threads and would otherwise have missed this plus the Big Screen mode.

Nice feature.

All I need now is multiple account logins to the same account using the same WAN address and im good :)

Yep, with Big Picture mode I don't want to have to think as to whether I've left the PC upstairs on, likewise when I'm upstairs I'd like to not worry about whether the HTPC has turned on and logged into Steam.

Glad to see it finally added in, though I think I will still probably use SteamMover to bounce installs around.

+1 for having individual threads for both large features like this, and for individual indie games, I'd miss a lot of this stuff else.

This has been an issue for me for a long time.

Personally, as long as each game is not being run more than once (or whatever permitted by the licence), I would like to login to every computer in the house on my Steam account. Maybe have the option of creating "guest" users.

This really bugs me about steam that i can't login on my Desktop Gaming PC & my Gaming HTPC at the same time..

Am have to login in and out of steam like a jojo between machines sometimes because of this..

Still can't move Team Fortress 2 :(

I'm not sure if this will apply to TF2, but steam wouldn't recognise the files when just copied a different game across to the new folder.

I managed to move an existing install of a non-Valve game by doing the following. I'm at work so this is what I worked out through trial and error last night, please correct me if I missed anything

If the game is huge and like me you don't want to re-download the entire game, here is the trick.:

  • Install a random game or app to your new folder. This creates a Common folder, an .acf file and new game data folder.
  • In the original steamapps folder, back up or move the game data to a safe location. I'm not just saying this, we are actually going to delete the game in steam in a moment.
  • Copy the .acf files from the same folder where common folder is located. This is to make it easier to restore should anything go wrong.
  • Log in to Steam and delete the game you are moving.
  • Now install the game, selecting the alternate folder.
  • Stop the download and log out of Steam.
  • Copy the backed up game folder in to the new Common folder in the new location.
  • In the root of the Common folder, identify which new .acf file relates to the game.
  • Open the new .acf file in notepad. Also open the original version of the .acf file that you remembered to back up earlier.
  • Edit the state value to 4 in the new .acf file only.
  • Copy the downloaded file size figure from the original .acf to the new one
  • Check that everything else matches between the two files (except the location data LOL).
  • Save the new .acf and log back in to Steam.
  • The game should display as being ready. When you run it for the first time Steam will perform a recheck and the game should launch.

It everything goes wrong, simply delete the game in Steam and restore the original game folder to the original drive and the .acf file back to the common folder.

These steps worked for me, but I'm recalling steps from late last night so don't forget to back up before doing any of this!

I was about to use this but from some of the comments GCF based games like TF2 still can't be moved and must still be in the Steam root folder?
