It was around christmas time last year I remember as there were 3-4 titles I wanted but couldn't buy as I was in Ireland at the time and their security measures said I couldn't buy because I was based in Belgium and the IP address was irish :(

Apparently you have to be in the country (based on your IP address) where the account is registered.

I'll have the same problem this year as well.

Where's the sense in that? The purpose of the sales is to make money, nice as it is for the consumer it's not done as a favour to gamers.

Go through a proxy?

I tried this a while back, and it's just too much hassle to bother. The speed on free proxies is woeful, and the connection always falls over when faced with a secure payment server on the far end.

Just poke someone on the forums, forward the cash through paypal and we'll buy you the game as a gift.

On the 20th it starts according to the Steam forums. Which makes sense since Valve want people to log in that day.
