Steam Database Hack - Has it finally been compromised?

So...Yesterday I had to cancel my credit card due to just over £900 going out to some insurance policies. Now, seeing as the card is left in my wallet, in my desk door, at home, and has never been lost, AND is only used on popular and secure websites, is it possible that the steam database (1 of only several places I have ever used it) has finally been cracked?

I got my money back today without any issues, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar situation with a card used on steam....

No problems with Steam for me.

I did have some fraudulent transactions on both of my credit cards at one point a few years ago which was sorted out for me by the CC companies. I think that was something to do with Amazon at the time.

Have you used it in any cash machines? I've had my card cloned twice via this method.

Nope, I deliberatly got a card which doesn't work in a cash machine just to stop some average joe pick pocket from using it. Only store I have ever used it in was a petrol station near xmas (Jan 8th), and I go in there every single day and use my normal card to buy my breakfast. Only reason for my using a credit card for breakfast was my forgetting to bring by debit cards.

@panyan "never use my CC on steam for this reason"

I'd rather use it on every website for this exact reason. After 24 hours of notifying the bank I have the money back in the account, the insurance policies taken with Tesco have been nullified and the fraud squad are looking into the Ip used (I doubt that goes anywhere.....). It's just a shame I have to pay 17.5% interest on the bloody thing if I don't pay it back within some allotted amount of time :D

the card details were salted/hashed... very unlikely they got decrypted.

i had my details on there, and nothing dodgy has happened since

I myself find it seriously hard to believe that this database has been cracked in any way. But given the power of modern botnets (Some are 6 million bots strong), who's to say someone didn't get lucky...

Unlikely TBH. If the guys that did the hack knew they had the means to decrypt the data they wouldn't be hitting steam up, they'd be hitting up the financial institutions where literally billions of transactions happen everyday with far better chances of hiding their activities for longer than going in with size 12's and taking out steam.

Couldn't agree more, just that in the history of the card steam is the only place I know of where my card details have physically got into someone else's hands.

Strange that they haven't cloned my other cards though.....maybe they only go for credit cars

Possibly, maybe they think it's more likely to go unnoticed than on regurlarly used debit cards, probably easier to see that the Indian/Slough transaction is weird when you were just in Doncaster or something with the debit card. Total guesing though, not exactly an expert in this area :D

Took me 6 days to notice the transactions :(

I'm just immensely happy that this did happen on my credit card, I'd have been totally "Cough naughty word here cough cough" if not.
