steam error code

hello just finished d/l gta4 from steam. installed game and went to play now everytime i try to start the game i keep getting a fatal error telling me i need vista service pack 1 as very least to run the game. has anyone else came across this or know how to fix it???

Tried verifying the game cache?

EDIT: Found this on the Steam forums too:

I was able to fix it by going to steam/steamapps/common/grand theft auto iv/GTAIV and then right clicking on LaunchGTAIV.exe and then going to "Compatibility" and setting it to Vista Service Pack 1

yeah win7 i managed to get game going by checking the run compatability mode however the game wont let me play in any resolution bar 800x600 anyone came across this as well???

Go into Steam, right click on the GTA IV shortcut, go to properties, click on set launch properties and try typing this into the box:

-nomemrestrict

Then put a space and then put this one in too:

-norestrictions

Might work.

that doesnt work i get a red message saying im close to exceeding recommended specs or something however it tells me im only using 202/3046mb so i dont understand that and bar what you suggested above i cant find anything else on google as what to do next

All you need to fix the VRAM glitch is ' -norestrictions '. If that doesn't work, try putting ' -nomemrestrict, -norestrictions ' with the comma.

Can you force it to run on a certain resolution by using the control panel for your graphics card? Nvidia control panel or Catalyst?

i have that added as killswitch suggested but still wont let me change res and still has the same error in graphics settings

If that's a 3GB card try deleting the other commands and replacing them with:

-availablevidmem 3.0

thnx killswitch that last one worked a treat, mind u the game runs like a bag o ****e right enough at low settings so dare not try to up them at all

Able to change resolutions now?

You might get better performance using single card mode as well, I'm sure I read you have a crossfire setup don't you?

yeah i have that disabled already as there is plenty reports on google about it not liking xfire as well

If it's running badly, it's probably not graphic settings holding it back. So you can probably turn graphic settings up without it running any worse. I'd try it at least.
