Steam Hardware Survey

gahhhh... my old PC fell into these categories :D

Q6600 @3.01ghz
4GB DDR2
8800GTS G92 512DDR3
Raptor 150gb

now i've only got the laptop :P

Just shows how good the Nvidia 8800 series was.... if you add up Vista and non vista... a third of stream games are played on an 8800 !

That's some market penatration!

People have to get your heads out of the clouds.

Although you may consider yourself a hardcore gamer, and think anyone who uses Steam is too, there is an incredible amount of casual gamers who have Steam on their Purple Shirt bought Laptops to play Peggle and Bejeweled. The hardcore gamers with the decent graphics cards, high levels of RAM and other stuff are in the minority.

play Peggle and Bejeweled
Or even HL2/Portal/TF2. My Athlon 2400+ and Radeon 9600 does fine for that stuff (okay, so it's not massively high res, but that doesn't affect the gameplay one bit...). Source games seem to be decently scaleable, so even some of the less casual games on Steam don't require hardcore gamer PCs.

You can be a hardcore gamer without having a monster rig. It's how you game, not what you game on.
I disagree.

A hardcore gamer (IMO) goes in for tourneys/ladders/etc. You simply cannot compete without a decent framerate and a decent resolution (widescreen for the extra visibility).

Granted you can (and a lot do) turn the video options down, but in newer games, even that isn't enough to give decent framerates at 1920x1200, or sometimes even 1650x1080, unless you have modern mid-top end hardware.

I always took being a hardcore gamer to be about how much you spend gaming and how much you enjoy it. :)

Which is why my Xfire status is simply Weekend Warrior :p

It is worth it, but from a 3.4GHz C2D I guess your waiting for the second gen before you think of taking the plunge.
