Steam / HL2 issue - any pointers?

I'm trying to install my retail copy of HL2 (first release, ~2004) onto my new DX11, Windows 7 PC.

First install seemed to run okay, but there didn't seem to be an .exe file anywhere to run the game - the 'Play HL2' icons that were placed into my start menu were just shortcuts to Steam. Steam wouldn't open and threw up a registry error.

I got into Steam, and tried to use the 'Activate a product' option, where it asks for a CD key. Entering the CD key from my HL2 box throws up a prompt to install HL2 first - which I can't do, as it's already installed according to the autorun menu on the CD.

Uninstalled HL2 and reinstalled - this time the installation is halted partway through, due to a missing file. (HL2_ico1.cab or some such thing.)

Is it possible to download HL2 software via Steam and use my retail CD key to activate it? Or does anyone know of a better solution?

Apologies if it's going over old ground, but I've Googled steam/hl2/installation/error/windows 7/ etc etc to death, and not getting anywhere!

Cheers,

Poh.

As far as i know yes, just install HL2 by downloading it through steam. You should be able to activate it on steam just using the key you have infront of you.
