steam- how does it work?

If you format your HDD, you can just download steam again, then login to your account and download the games again. The games are saved to your account, so wherever you login, you can download them and play them.

its like a lobby with games in, you pay for ones u want, it downloads them then u play them. If you format ure pc then u loose them but can redownload them as they will be tied to your account. u can also back your games up (dont know much about this tho because never done it, only seen the option)

Just copy the entire steam folder to another drive if you have it, once you've reformatted & reinstalled the OS you simply run the steam.exe in the folder, that way you still have all your game files and save games without having to download them again. You don't even need to install steam again, too.

I love this, I wish more developers were like it :(

Edit: I read yesterday that EA are pushing for a one platform system, which will probably involve anywhere login/download...

Hmm...so if a mate gives me his username and password, I presume I can log on as him (as long as he's not logged on) and download and play the games he owns then?

Rather old copy of the SteamFAQ, guess the one that was last updated got nuked.

Basically, everything is linked to your Steam account off in Valve's servers, meaning you can log in anywhere and play the games you own once you download them.

Stuff like savegames and extra maps / mods are stored on the local PC, so savegames need to be backed up if you were to ever wipe your PC.

just downloaded company of heroes it 100% downloaded but when i click on it it says the game is currrently unavailable please try again later? its been like this for a few hours, any ideas?

Do they actually check anything, to prevent two or more people from sharing an account? Other than the fact that you can only have one person signed in at a time?

I think as long as only one is signed in at a time it should be fine. Can use your account on different pc's etc.
