Steam In-game Community not working, Help me fix this please.

hi, have a problem with steam in-game community, it never works for me, pressing shift/tab never does anything in game, ive searched google for hours but still cant get it to work.

Things ive tried.

Checked steam for updates, non found.

Checked the integrity of my games cache, this didnt work.

Deleted gameoverlay.exe and associated files, restart steam and let it update, didnt work.

Backed up my games, unistalled steam, reinstalled steam, put my games back in, this didnt work.

Only have windows security essentials for my av and stuff, have been in there and set it to ignore steam all together, this didnt work.

Any suggestions ? as id like this working
 
Stupid questions but 1) Are you sure your Shift/Tab buttons are working? and 2) Did you accidently change the overlay hotkey? Shift+Tab is just the default.
 
no its shift/tab, my keyboard is ok, thing is i have been trying in dirt 2 to get this working and presumed it was broke , untill i tried left for dead2 and it works in that, is it just me being stupid and its not supported in dirt 2 ?

If its just happening in one game, it could be some key bindings messing it up.
 
I remember some people saying there are problems with the Steam Overlay and GFWL games. It seems to vary a lot... some people can't access it at all, sometimes its hit n miss, some have no problems. Mine seems hit n miss when it comes to GFWL games, both Red Faction: Guerilla and Fallout 3 (at least) have sometimes had problems with the overlay not working.

Had exactly the same problem for ages. Couldn't find a solution. The only thing i found out was that it may well be Evga Precision or MSI Afterburner causing a problem if you have either running. The OSD overrides the Steam Overlay feature.

However, i have MSI afterburner still installed and over the past week, the overlay has started to work again gradually in more and more games (it would not work in ANY game).

Not much help i know, but you are not alone, and maybe, like me, it will just start to work again.

BTW, i tried everything everyone told me too.

May be worth a look if your have wither of the mentioned installed though. :confused:
 
I found if you use the default Shift+tab in dirt 2, the steam overlay didn't work. I changed the binding to Insert (next to home) and now it works. My Dirt2 is a non steam version btw (i've added the dirt shortcut like i do with all my games) and i can open GFWL and steam overlay at the same time in dirt2.

Try changing your key binding

yeah i have MSI afterburner, have tried it without it running and its still the same.

I will give changing shift/tab to something else a go, as thats one i havnt seen, thanks
