Steam Link and Steam Controller now available to Pre Order

Sounds like the same experience I have, excellent bit of kit and does the XB1 dongle work, I thought I read they don't and had to be hardwired?

XB1 wireless dongle is Windows 10 only so wouldn't work. As stated, XB1 pad can be used wired.

I hope someone manages to fix this somehow.

(nvidia gpu related)

It's taken me two solid days to set mine up properly, one thing I've learned is if your having problems first check what encoder your using while in game, turn on performance stats so you can see, I was selecting hardware encoding but found out that wasn't actually being enabled in game, I had to toggle the ShadowPlay switch on and off in the Geforce Experience to get it to work again.

These threads helped me a lot,

Definitely a bit of a learning to curve to fix issues on these things, learning how to read the stats helps a lot, there seems to be a lot of variables that can potentially effect the performance on this device.

Ive just left shadow play on, is that not right then? Seems to work well so far?

Cheers!

Right I was finally going to get these but I just saw the ridiculous "shipping fees" on Steam - something like over €26 just to post two small items!? No thanks.

Do we still have ye olde bricks-and-mortar video game shops nowadays? I haven't been in one since I bought half-life 2.

Only shop i know of that was selling the steam hardware is Game, but they force you to buy it as a bundle with steam credit etc so not the best way either! May be different actually in the store but thats the case on there website

Can buy then without in the store. 39.99 for link which is fine and dandy, for some reason they have marked up the controller to 44.99 lol. But still a saving over the shipping from steam.

My wife picked up the last link+controller, que me being too excited to wait for xmas:) Anyhow had a quick 20 mins fiddle and at the moment I have one question, How do I adjust the screen as some of the screen does not fit. I'm missing top write hand corner of steam.

If you head into the menu (Link menu, not Steam menu) on the first screen, there is an adjustment for under/overscan in there. I'm not infront of it right now so can't tell you exactly!

Cheers m8 that fixed it. Loving the link it works very well indeed I have been shlumping on the couch today with my boy:) Its great having access to all my steam games on a 106 inch screen.

Well, I've found that I get a brilliant experience now... I've got the Steam Link hard wired to the VM Superhub, and I'm using 5GHz wireless on my PC via a TP Link AC600. I've put all other wireless devices on 2.4GHz so the 5GHz is dedicated to my link.

May not need to run a cable at all. I'm on Beautiful streaming setting and don't get the lag I had over powerline. Packet loss is 0% and Frame loss is apparently 0.17% - I'm not sure if that is to do with me having a frame limit set up though in RT.

Might not have to run a cable after all!

Sounds like perfect results to me! Using wired via tp link wall plugs i get about 1.5% frame loss max on the virgin hub! Think my network plugs could be better as i have the basic ones really

I've picked up a link on eBay for £45. Not bad. A small saving over the shipping costs on Steam and certainly better than having to buy a bundle from Game given I'd already picked up a controller separately so would then have to deal with the hassle of selling one on.

just to note I have the superhub 2

connected using the link's wireless onto the hubs 5ghz and the connection seems to be very good, tried playing Farcry, which have to say in game played pretty good, very respsonsive, until the game crashed on exit( a problem with the game nothing else)

so gave BLOPS 3 a go, which was a nightmare to go thru the setup using my steam controller, and not having used a controller for years is, so i was all over the place and no matter what i tried i could not get it to stop playing in split screen mode Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, i would get it to show "split screen" de-activated" but then as i went to play it activated again doh!!

so gave up and went onto BLOPS 2, a lot better, the game play and video was great, couple of blippy bits but very playable (once i get used to aiming with the controller)

so then i decided to connect the Link direct to my super hub's Ethernet port,

(obviously main PC upstairs is still using wifi)

i think this provided a slightly more seamless connection, and game play was really smooth,

im no techy, so just telling it how i see it,

really glad i bought the link, and getting used to the controller which is the Key to everything, as that turns on the Link and you go from there, even used it to restart my pc, if i cannot get used to the aiming thou i might have to try the Xbox 360 controller , just think its not very responsive, dont know if you can adjust it

Thank you,

Very helpful, I have ordered the link tonight. How long do they take to come?

now youll tell me you ordered from Game lol

So, I`m not a huge Steam gamer, BUT I have wired home network, I play world of warships on occasion, is this solution feasible? (for couch based warship-ing), I understand you can add a n other non steam game to steam etc................. and if so would a keyboard and mouse be better for this particular game etc?

What's the verdict on the controller? I held one a while back and thought it felt comfortable although I was surprised by how small some of the buttons were. How is it when used in anger? Does it work everywhere an xbox360 pad does? Pondering over replacing my very battered 360 pad with one for more casual pc gaming :)

The controller is mind boggling. The rapid iteration on controller schemes feels like I'm having to learn to play a game all over again each time I pick it up. It feels like there are limitless ways to set it up and until people establish standardised configs for each genre of games its going to be hard to make a final opinion.

Simple games just work. Rocket League for example I'd never played before picking up the Steam controller, yet I was able to score within 2 minutes of my first ever game.

Planetside 2 on the other hand is proving a challenge. 4 hours or so I've spent on my controller config. Just when I think I've nailed it I discover another awesome feature like the gyro, mode shifting, touch menu's or whatever and I have to make some changes and and re-wire my brain for the new setup.

I'm definitely sticking with it though. Had some inspiration from people playing Star Wars Battlefront with the controller. One guy had tweaked the Gyro FPS config that had become the norm which was floating around different forums and it seems from reading his description he's got a more intuitive setup which I need to try.
