Okay so long time ago I bought a steam link ****** about all weekend with it and it never worked smoothly, I tried it wired and wireless. It wouldn't even stream a lego game with out massive stutter.

I see nvidia shield is triple the price but also the power is vastly superior so I'm wondering if it would work ?

Moving pc into living room is not an option due to the size of it and no space for it either

Before you spend money on Shield you can try the new Steam Link app if you have an Android TV, tablet/ phone that you can connnect to your TV.

We have a Sony TV with Android TV and while back I installed Moonlight app and it worked pretty good, had it on my tablet as well though not used it for a while. I might try the new Steam app when I have more time.

Any stutter if using ethernet must be either a networking issue, underpowered host or duff Steam link box.

Heck, I run off a powerline to two Steam links and both are flawless. Wifi on the other hand is a different issue but that is because wifi is ****, not a problem with Steam link.

The device receiving the stream is only playing a video, it's 'power' really doesn't matter.

The stuttering is usually caused by network issues unless you have something weird going on with the broadcast PC. You should try the Steam link again and work out what's going on.

I sold the steam link box on cause it drove me up the wall, the person I sold it to has no issues.

I changed settings in router, and pc etc nothing made a difference at times it wouldn't even connect and that was on power line adapters.

Could distance be an issue? PC is in atic and tv I stream it to is two flights of stairs below

I didn't have a good experience of powerline adapters I think they work OK if they are both on the same circuit but not where you have multiple circuits like a lot of modern buildings. I doubt your sockets in the attic are on the same circuit as your living room which could be the issue. You could run some ping tests or more extensive software based network traffic checks between 2 devices connected to either end of the powerline link to confirm if that is the issue. You might not notice a flaky link until you really push it. I ended up running a CAT5e cable from upstairs to downstairs and have never looked back.

There the entry level power line adapters by tp link there nothing special and are old now, only other thing I have to do is and its very random is at times in atic it will say no Internet I'll unplug powerline adapter and plug it back in and works fine. Now this could happen once a month or then not at all for even longer

with steamlink some games play smooth as silk for me eg rocket league and some stutter bad eg dirt rally, I do have the pc upstairs wireless though and the link wired downstairs, maybe would work better if I had it the other way around?

A network is only as good as its weakest link, if that makes sense?

The above is also true for the Ops original issue.

Wifi is not the best despite the marketing behind it unless you are willing to setup multiple access points around your property but for devices in a "fixed location", may as well just run a cable :D
