Steam link or HDMI Cable...?

Steam link still the best £40 ive spent in a long time. Glad to hear you will be hardwiring it rather than wifi, here mixed things about wifi!

My set up goes Steam link via ethernet to virgin media router, then router to a network power plug in the wall. And at the other end a power plug to my pc. So not truely direct but best i can do and to be honest its spot on.

Every now and then it may seem to be a bit slow, so all i do is turn off one of the power plugs and then back on. Seems to fix the connection somehow, bare in mind i am using the cheapo tp link ones.

Perfect for controller based games. I do keep a wireless keyboard under the coffee table just incase an error occurs and i need to use a mouse or something

Mileage may vary with non steam games. Origin ones seem to think im using a mouse and keyboard when the 360 pad is plugged in so it just doesnt work, and uplay games seem ok except assassins creed syndicate was very choppy whereas rainbow 6 siege was fine!

Oh yes, do hardwire it. It flat out was unusable over wifi for me. I am using the power plug thingies.

I have two controllers plugged into it - Steam controller and wireless 360 controller depending on the game.

Has anyone got 5.1 audio working properly on Steam link yet? I set it up and only get FL and FR channels by the looks of it in games. Annoying.

I've got windows set to 5.1 audio.

I've never got In Home Streaming working properly across 2 Host PCs and 3 different Client machines (2 laptops and a HTPC) over the course of a couple of years. I even made a thread on here about how crap it is.

But the Steam Link is in a different league. It just works (most of the time). Make sure your TV is in Game mode though, that caused me all sorts of issues for a while.

Mate, that does make me pleased to hear as I honesty did wonder why can't a 1gig network handle this?

I tried all settings, but I keep on hearing how magical the steam link box is. They must have like I say some voodoo in that little box that just makes it work where clients machines such as HTPC's just don't seem to cut it.

Steam link has now gone on my steam wish list, I 100% should have picked one up in the last steam sale..

In home streaming works great for me. Less of a chore than HDMI though you're losing on image quality I think the trade off is about worth the convenience.

With Steam Link, can the PC you are streaming from still be used? I often don't have the heart to kick the kids off playing Minecraft or doing their homework, but want to play something on the PC.

Sadly not....but an update on my original question it is a lot better then a long HDMI cable! No resolution/sound switching and just works....

P.s I'm on good wired net....
