My steam has been acting up lately. It usually loads up when I log in to my user but isn't doing so. Also clicking on the exe it says it's loaded in task manager processes, but it's not running in applications or showing in the icon tray like it should and the steam window doesn't pop up either. When I can get the exe to load it just says connecting to steam and does nothing. When I do have it up it crashes often. This has only started happening earlier today. What could be the problem? And is there any way to fix it without reinstalling steam?

I do get the same problem from time to time.. running win7 64. I just open task manager, go to processes, right click on steam (there are 2 of em) and choose end process. Then re launch steam.

There was a massive update for Company of Heroes Opposing Fronts, but I had a problem connecting previously because I had PeerBlock running at the same time. Not sure about the status with PeerGuardian, but exiting PeerBlock temporarily fixed the connection problems for me.

I'm having same problem, copied steam folder from xp install over to win7 and it says updating and hangs anywhere between 3-18%

Run the steam.exe as the administrator and see if it helps.

Had the same problem as you Showboat updating steam until running it as the admin.

I had that problem just today, you shouldn't need any compatibility modes etc, what fixed it for me was removing any profile related folders from the steam/steamapps folder and deleting the two .blob files in the main folder

After it had updated, which actually reqired me to click cancel twice and retry it to get it to download, it asked me to login again, and now it works fine :)

I had the exact same problem. Like mrbios said, I went into my Program Files\Steam folder and deleted EVERYTHING except for Steam.exe and the steamapps folder. Next time I launched, it went through reinstallation, and has worked fine ever since.

I've been downloading on it all night, and it's been acting up - freezing and randomly crashing - quite a few times.

Probably something to do with the load from the L4D2 demo.
