No. At least its HIGHLY unlikely as it depends on the games.

Steam will probably work with Wine emulation, but whether or not any games work depends on the game itself.

Not likely. The problem isn't getting steam to run, its the individual game. Steam is basically just a shortcut.

The majority of games using the Source engine work very well.

Steam itself also works very well.

I ahve played CSS and TF2 on linuc before at 60fps on dx7 or 8, ran well. This was around 2007/2008 so things maybe even better now.

All the source games that I own run very well, UT3 doesn't run too well, but does run, Resident Evil 5 doesn't run at all, STALKER CoS runs well (but on DX8), ermmm... a bunch of other stuff runs...

Your games are not guaranteed to run, but they might. If you're a gamer, it's probably best to dual boot.

reccomend installing playonlinux, will install a lot of games ready to go.

sudo apt-get install playonlinux

cod4 should work, needs to be v1.7, disable depth of view and soften smoke edges.

I tried this a couple of months ago on Ubuntu 9.10 and CS:S would only run for about 10 minutes before it crashed me back to the desktop, after doing some searching online, I found out that it has something to do with Pulseaudio that causes it to crash, however I didn't attempt to fix it..

I used Wine to install Steam.

Just to echo everybody else:

Steam installs on Wine fine.

Lots of steam games (especially the Source-engine-based ones) work great if a little slower than on a native install of Windows.

COD4 works great. At least it used to when I played through it shortly after its release. Internet MP didn't work because it needed punkbuster and Wine is a replacement of a lot of Windows libraries so it looks like you're using hax. I'm not sure on the LAN MP but it's certainly worth trying.

For any other game, Google: appdb <<game title>>

You'll find technical instructions on how to install/run the games there if there are any major workarounds needed.

If you're lazy or not technical enough, consider Cedega. It's a commercial version of wine aimed at supporting a small set of games as well as possible. It costs money but you have somebody to whine at if things don't go to plan.
