Steam problem again

hi all

after installing a new hdd and fresh install of windows xp pro sp1 i ahd installed steam, updated it and installed and updated dod source.

after restarting jsut now because steam wouldnt load, the problem has persisted.

this used to happen on my old hdd and install, so im lsot for ideas on solving the problem.

aperntly, steam is already open, but the menus arent there and i any time i click one of the shortcuts, nothing happens, unless i click the steam one, in which case it tells me that steam is already running.

please help im at my whits end

ive had this steam would take about 5 minutes to load, i thought it wasnt ever going to work. Drive was freshly defragged too.

Dunno why it does it...

have you tried loaded dod direct from an icon ? does it still do it?

im starting to hate steam, its all starting to kick off on the distrobution side and its constant annoying little updates.

Try updating to Service Pack 2. No idea if that would help but it's a sensible thing to do either way.

I have this - sometimes it takes about 5minutes to load, its prob due to the amount of users on steam.. no idea

try going to your task manager and then process and shut down the steam process. Then restart steam. I used to get this, only a couple of times though not on every bootup like you. oh and deffo get sp2!

Its because of your ping time. Basically, Steam needs to make an initial contact with its servers before it can start doing anything (Including logging you in), and they haven't actually thought to put a dialog box saying that :rolleyes:

Your best bet is probably restarting your router & / or exiting any P2P programs.

i hated it when i had it last time, caused more problems than it fixed

any real reason to have it, i mean i dont wmp, or really any microsoft stuff :confused:

Added security and less holes for your machine to be open to problems. Nice to have the system completely up to date, plus you get more things working on it too, not really much of a reason not to install it.
