Hi has anyone managed to get a refund from Steam?

I purchased the Quake collection yesterday for $14.99, none of which works for one reason or another. Anyway, rather than even bother with the troubleshooting, i've just asked Steam for a refund right away. I would have hoped that Steam test their products to work on a generic setup before selling the title.

I'm guessing they'll say get lost. In which case I'll resort to buying retail, in which you have a leg to stand on, when it comes to a refund.

I dont see that happening. i would think its down to the person to decide if the game can run on there system
i dont see it being a problem on STEAM side that the game doesnt work

Not a *********'s chance in hell :).

Oh and it's not Steam's problem, it's the publisher's. Steam is just the content delivery system.

Not sure about that, in the UK at least if you buy a PC game you are NOT allowed to return it because it doesnt work or wont run. because of the system specs, i am not sure if there would be anything you could to if the game didnt work other then if the game disc wouldnt read

I got an extra copy of torchlight by accident and requested a refund. Thy basically said FU so I had to give it ti a mate as a six month early birthday present. N1 steam.

Try running the games in software mode rather than OpenGL, if they work then you may need to use older video drivers. I found recently the latest NVIDIA drivers caused OpenGL to break in these games.

As for getting a refund, you could try contacting customer support but there's virtually no consumer protection with these services so I doubt you'd get anywhere.

So you want a refund becasue you are too lazy to get a 10 year old+ game to work?

Thats harsh. The games steam sell should work on the majority of todays systems. What would be the point in selling a game that works on nothing newer than say windows 95?

Its pretty easy to get these games working fine on Windows XP, vista and win 7 infact most of the quake games should work out the box even old quake 1.

My point exactly. It should work and if it doesn't you should get your money back.

What would happen if you bought a toaster, plugged it in and it didn't work?

They could easily publish a game that didn't work on ANY system, rip everyone off and say hey it' just doesn't work on your system.. whats them to stop doing that?

I saw the special offer and though hmmmm i wouldn't mind having a retro session on quake.. didn't realize they hadn't improved on the image to make it work on a typical generic setup of today. robbed !

PEBKAC.

There is nothing wrong with the game, the game works perfectly.

Except in this case you essentially bought an American toaster and tried to plug it into an English socket.

Hmm just tried my Q1/2/3 on steam, 2 and 3 arnt loading at all, the process runs for a fraction of a second before stopping with no msg. Must be a win7 64 issue as Ive never had any problems before on xp and vista 32/64.

I agree this is annoying but if you look at the system requirements they all say win 2000/xp/vista compatible. You should have checked them before purchase.

it depends i m guessing no, but have you treid everything possible to get it to work and I think thats the only time steam may give you a refund.

So bring on compatibility wizard :p

Disable crossfire and they will work, also dont use the opengl 4.0 beta's as they will break both quake 1 and 2

If you buy through Impulse you get a refund if there is a technical problem. If you don't like the software you can get 75% of your money refunded.

How do you accidentally buy video games? Even with Steam you have to click about 3 buttons, including a "confirm" button, so going through the whole process accidentally is an impressive feat :p

Products should be fit for purchase imo and shouldn't require a whole lot of fiddling to get them working. All retailers should take the Good Old Games approach and make sure their games actually work on a modern OS before selling them.

Managed to get a refund for BC2 pre-order so I could buy it off EA Store.

How do they handle registered retail games - do they deactivate it off the original owners account?

what steam should do for future customers, is do a system check which confirms whether the game is compatible with your system and confirm what criteria you fit in. i.e. low spec = your system spec is low and you may experience slow gameplay ect/ or unfortunately your system does not match the system requirements and confirm why.
