Steam reveal

^ lol

This could go either way really. As discussed this SteamOS could potentially be more hassle than it's worth. No thanks to fantastic copycat-piece of the pie attempts like Origin.

On the flip side currently my rig boots straight into Big Picture mode on the TV as it is...

That's exactly what I want, just my gaming PC is in a different room and I don't want to build another expensive rig for big screen gaming. I may cancel my XB1 order due to the Steam streaming announcement :)

It would be great if one PC could feed multiple SteamOS installs throughout the house.

I might dual boot the steamOS on my pc to try it but in general I dont see anything interesting about this. Id much rather just game directly on my pc (streaming bleh) and use a PS4 under the tv.

Looks like the prototypes use Intel CPUs and Nvidia graphics cards:

I saw this too... have to admit I'm surprised at how powerful Valve's prototype machines are. Surely they wouldn't be proposing a machine with these specs just to play the basic Linux-native Indie titles + Source engine games? It makes me think a superior Source 2 engine and associated games must be on the way :p

BETA TEST AGREEMENT

1. Valve Corporation ("Valve", "We", "Us" or "Our") has developed and produced prototypes of entertainment system hardware and software, including a set-top box running custom software and a game controller (collectively: "Beta Products"). These Beta Products are currently being prepared for a limited beta testing program ("Beta Program") involving select end users of Our online service known as Steam ("Steam").

2. The terms of the existing Steam Subscriber Agreement (http://store.steampowered.com/subscriber_agreement/) ("SSA") between You and Valve (or a Valve affiliate) apply to all aspects of the Beta Program, supplemented by the terms of this Agreement. In particular, the limitations of liabilities and disclaimer of warranties as presented in section 7 of the SSA shall extend to both the hardware and software Beta Products.

3. If You are selected as a participant in the Beta Program, Valve will make the Beta Products available to You as part of the Beta Program. The Beta Products will remain the property of Valve, and We may require You to return the Beta Products to Us upon request at Our expense (for example, without limitation, if such return is required to comply with regulatory restrictions, or if we feel it would be useful for us to examine the Beta Products to confirm or reproduce defect or errors that You identify). For this reason, the Beta Products are not for resale.

4. You are responsible for any taxes or other dues that You may incur by participating in the Beta Program and/or receiving the Beta Products from Us.

does that mean i would have to pay something in this beta testing?

hmmmm done some searching and seems like yes i would have too pay taxs which depending what steam puts the valve of the hardware and package it could be a lot. i think i won't join

Looks pretty cool, I just wonder how the right thumb will be after a extreme gaming session. I mean with a 360 pad you just hold the stick right and it will spin around slow, with this you get nice fast movement but have to lift the thumb a lot and press right. Don't even use the right thumb with a mouse unless you click the extra buttons a mouse may have. It will probs be fine but I dunno if the thumb will start to get tired lol.

Looks pretty much unusable for any multiplayer FPS, unless you want to get your ass handed to you.

I was gonna say something like that I mean how can you stel left or right on this :P

I'm all for helping the novice get in to pc gaming and something like this should help but it would make for a unlevel playing field online for people I think

Obviously if you're competitive online then you want the best possible experience. But I prefer my gaming offline where I can at least pretend to have some skill, so that video shows exactly what I was anticipating... a vastly improved controller experience!

Until I forced myself to get to grips with a controller to play the masterful Last of Us on PS3 I hated controllers. Now I tolerate them, because I've learned -- rather late in life! -- that the sit back and relax style of gaming does have an appeal in some circumstances.

Not that I spent long sitting back and relaxing in Last of Us. :-)

I also need to work on my posture now my back's increasingly knackered, so more time gaming while sat "properly" in my office chair will also be good for me.

I like it - looks like it would work great for the kind of living-room gaming I would want to do... Of course it won't be as good as M&K for multiplayer shooters but I don't think I would play those sat on the sofa anyway... For a single player FPS like Bioshock or something it looks like it would be better than a normal controller

I haven't played a PC game in almost a year, but SteamOS may tempt me back if it means I can play my whole Steam collection from the comfort of the sofa in my living room, playing on a large Samsung TV screen.

So the Steam streaming beta has been announced.... If you join the group on Steam you may get invited to try it

I really want to give it a go! If it works in testing to my old laptop (plugged into a wired connection) then I'll be building a Steambox asap
