Steam reveal

If that statement is by an actual Valve employee, then sorry I am out,and I have a GTX660. How mature then, especially when AMD makes up around 40% of the discrete card market, and with their IGPs has greater marketshare than Nvidia.

What is the point, when a Windows license will give you years of usage for around 70 quid(you can still run DX11 games on Vista which is 7 years old for example),and simply has better hardware support?? Windows 7 and Windows 8 were dirt cheap at launch. People spend way more on hardware over 5 to 7 years than the OS they use.

I want hardware choice in my DIY builds, which is the main reason I do them, not a Hobsons choice, which ends up potentially costing me more.

Totally agree with you (and usually do!). SteamOS is going to be so limited in terms of hardware and games compared to Win8 that it's of no interest to me. All that guff from them about ****ging off Win8 just looks to me like they were trying to rubbish it in an attempt to make their own OS look better, which it isn't and probably never will be.

If games are more optimised on this new OS, could we see most PC gamers using it as a main OS?

no because many of us use our pc's for more then just gaming.

me myself i use my pc for photo editing and coding.

what are the chances of lightroom/photoshop and eclipse IDE working on Steam OS?

Yep,and the thing is I did think, this might have been OK for a low cost secondary LAN or under TV box for running some games. However,if it means locked in hardware choices,I really don't want it especially since AMD(and maybe Intel in the future) has a better set of parts IMHO in this bracket.

True but wouldn't it be amazing if we really could finally move away from the stumbling dinosaur that is Microsoft? Can Google do it? Can anyone do it? Can Valve?

That will only happen,if on the graphics side they show no bias towards AMD,Nvidia or Intel.

The problem is that it looks like they are showing bias towards Nvidia, which makes this no better than an PS4 or XBox One,ie,essentially a very closed platform or an Apple desktop computer.

DIY PC gaming is cost effective as it offers varied hardware choices, which means lower hardware cost overall.

I don't want to be put in a situation where I need to pay more for hardware in the future just for using SteamOS.

Spending pounds to save pennies is what comes to mind!

The future of games on Windows is not bright.

Admittedly an old article, but if future version of Windows ditch the desktop (they will, most likely), then all you're left with is the Windows Store, for all your games.

Which means we're all screwed ;) Sure, Windows is a good platform for games *now*, but the future is very, very uncertain.

The absolute best thing that could happen is for Linux to become a proper gaming OS. Maybe then MS will change course (or maybe they won't).

As a total Linux noob, SteamOS needs to incredibly user friendly. I just tried Ubuntu and installing Steam. Straight away it came up with some kind of error saying Jocky dependency or something. And then I was unsure which nVidia driver to pick as several came up instead of the default x-org. All that really must be taken care of in SteamOS.

Even if MS did ditch the desktop, unlikely IMO, that doesn't mean it'll kill off PC gaming. Metro interface (or whatever it's called now) is just another medium for launching apps/software.

I agree with you about Linux being a proper gaming OS, but it will take years for devs to cross develop with Windows to a point where they're on a level playing field just in terms of games available, not to mention hardware compatibility. Really MS has a massive monopoly on PC gaming (almost makes me think that DirectX is anti-competitive) that Steam will have a very hard time denting that. SteamOS doesn't really give you an experience that is very different from the consoles IMO so I can't see the attraction, unless you're a Steam fanboy (not you personally).

No, it's really not. All Metro apps have to be bought from the Windows Store.

That means they all have to be vetted by MS, and conform to a set of (very strict) rules, before they gain approval. One such rule is that you may not publish any adult-themed apps.

Now imagine MS having absolute and final say in *all* games released for Windows. They can make you cut anything they want, can totally dictate what kind of games are released, and simply refuse to accept anything that doesn't comply.

Imagine that. That's the future MS want for Windows. A closed ecosystem like XBox. Everybody has to pay MS to release an app, and MS has to approve all software being released.

Scary, no?

Who has the incentive? Steam do, as do Apple IMO, but that's about it really. The cost of competing against gaming on Windows will be huge and it's probably not a big enough market to be worthwhile.

Agree again. Also, I think that picking sides with GPUs is a bad move for an open source OS.

For me this just differentiates Steam with stuff like Origin a bit more, playing into the 'we're all about the community' ethos even more.

No, not at all.

There's lots of adult content in Xbox games, they're not going to have different principle with PC gaming suddenly. You're worrying unnecessarily.

The only reason they want that control is to get a more stable platform like Apple have, which can only be a good thing really. It might finally stop some of the buggy messes we get released!

Everyone's talking about it whether or not it's a Windows killer, but I don't think that's the point at all. It's the ultimate console killer. Any PC manufacturer on the planet will be able to knock up a box with this OS on it and provide instant access to the entire Steam library.

The games are cheaper, better, and there's no MS or Sony vetting process to get past. Literally the only downside is the download only option and storage.

I'd be ******* myself now if i were in charge of XBox or PS4.

No that's not right. 90% of the Steam library isn't accessible on Linux except via streaming for which you require a more powerful PC. Plus EA are unlikely to join in until Valve drop their requirement for taking a cut of microtransactions.

No one outside of PC gaming gives a rats bum about the Steam library. Unless it has the big releases that consoles have it won't bother Sony and MS too much. I know there's some big AAA games on Steam but are they going to get ported, to OpenGL? I doubt it.

Edit, also what ic1male said. :p

Devils advocate, have there been any instances where MS have vetoed a game, but it has been released as-is on PS?

Yep, from the announcement:

"You can play all your Windows and Mac games on your SteamOS machine, too. Just turn on your existing computer and run Steam as you always have - then your SteamOS machine can stream those games over your home network straight to your TV!"

If this works well I'll be a very happy gamer. Not being able to play Steam games on the lounge tv/projector has been pain for years!

You missed the bit about them wanting to make loads of money from licensing each game.
