I've checked steam forum and tried suggested fixes but it's not having it.

Installed Steam for the first time in 7 months and it logs in fine, verifies fine and i'm online when logged in for 10 seconds - then it goes to offline and downloads stop.

It's not a firewall issue.

Any tips? Is it likely to be my router or my ISP?
I'm with Plusnet Fibre - not sure if others have ever had to do anything to access Steam? I never had to in the past though with them.

Steam servers are all online.

Have u got any anti virus software running and have u tried disabling it.

This isn't a steam problem but something blocking steams connections from what u have described

I don't have any anti-virus on. I wiped the PC and did a full install from scratch to fix another issue. So I started installing the likes of Steam first to get it all running.

Think i'll contact Plusnet and see if it's their end as can't see anything on my end that is stopping it. Hopefully they are of some help...

7 months since I've played anything on PC - and first day of trying and it reminded me why I stopped!!
I'd still like to play PC games but I simply don't have the time or inclination to sort out problems when they arise.

Been with Plusnet for years and Steam has always ran perfectly fine.

I did yeah - but that was before I'd restarted my PC like after putting in the verification code so could be worth trying that again just to be sure - in case it did need a restart.

I tried most things I think as there is a thread on Steam when I googled the problem.

It does appear to be ISP or Router related - but figured I'd see if there were any simple things to try like you suggested in the meantime.

Would that still need doing after re-installing Windows and Steam from scratch? I completely wiped everything.

Didn't think to try that as assumed it was all reset.

I did have to verify Steam as it said I'm running it from a new computer.

Try this

In Finder, go to Users -> Your Account -> Library -> Application Support -> and then locate Registry.vdf and open it with TextEdit.

In the Registry.vdf file, find the word "Offline" "1" and then replace 1 with 0 and save it. That's it, you should be able to open Steam now, that's how I fixed mine couple years back.

Tried everything suggested and nothing is working like.

Steam loads up everytime if I restart my PC, but quickly reverts to offline mode, then I can't get back on it if I shut it down.

Must be something to do with Plusnet so I'll call them later.

I'll try the download one tonight, cheers.

I'm running windows 7 at the minute.

I wonder if it's anything to do with the windows install.
I have a programs file for 32 bit and 64 bit so everything is duplicated - not sure how that happened or if it's just normal

Actually - I should try Steam on my laptop to see what it does there.
If it has the same problem, I can at least then plug that in via ethernet cable to see if that helps.

PlusNet have checked and it's not them blocking it, nor is it a port issue on my router.

Hmmmmmm

Guess I'll try the Steam Forums from here and see if I get any joy.

This reminds me of the problem I had with SCII crashing to desktop and every fix known in the world dind't help my situation! lol
I'm sure I'm just meant to be a console gamer...

wow this sounds irritating, hope you get it fixed - please post the solution when you find it! :p

Will do.

Weird how it intially lets me in the first time I boot the PC up. Then after mere seconds it goes into offline mode. Then I log of out steam and can't log back in until I restart the PC.

So far:

Not ISP fault
Not Router/port fault
Not Anti-Virus/Firewall fault
Not registry.vdf fault
Not run as admin fault
Not cache fault

Last suggestion on here is change the download location which I'll do shortly.

But...basically it's pretty damn annoying.

Was all happy as well that the PC was back up and running and was even looking at doing some upgrades to the GPU and RAM or just building another 1 and leaving this as a work/internet browsing PC now that my Laptop is on its last legs - Had to solder some joints inside to keep it running so I think it's about done!!

I guess if I make another PC then this won't be a problem anymore as I won't use it for Gaming - but it's still going to annoy me until I sort it out

Is it actually going into offline mode, Can you still message people when this happens? or is it just pausing the download? I know you said its going offline but wanted clarification on it.

I think so but I'll confirm.

It does come up and say 'offline' but it does still show my friends online.
Although, according to their list, I am 'offline'.

When I actually try to log into steam after closing, it just says 'no internet connection'
