Steam Survey Market Share (May 2021 Edition)

From everything I'm hearing I don't think there will be any doubt come the next gen of cards. Nvidia are in for a lot stiffer competition from AMD and Intel taking them on at the lower end.

AMD have to, FSR at its worst is not going to look anything like as good as DLSS 2.0 at its best, all we have is 4 minutes of a Youtube video showing FSR before launch, already Youtubers are lining up to say "at best its only as good as DLSS 1" which was ###### shockingly bad and they know it.

FSR WILL gain A LOT of traction with game developers, but a lot of the people reviewing and buying GPU's will poo poo on it, they are already setting that stage, its not even out yet, eventually FSR will become THIE standard but it will not help AMD's sales.

AMD have to be brutally aggressive, they have to have native reforestation performance that's better than Nvidia's DLSS performance, AMD have to make sure those looking for fault have nothing.

Only then will AMD gain ground on Nvidia.

Intel could make a mainstream 16 core CPU for around £650.

They don't want to do that, this is way beyond where Intel are willing to go, they went to 10 cores and found AMD pushing even more and so they walked it back to 8 and they want £550 for that.

That's how AMD won the retail war back, by being more pig headed than Intel,
I don't care how big you are you punch me and i'll punch back twice as hard, how much blood are you willing to spill because i have nothing to lose! Eh?!?!?!

That's how AMD need to tackle Nvidia.

I'm amazed AMD have eaten so much into Intel's market share. Given most buyers don't have a clue that've very impressive. I can see 50:50 coming sooner than expected. GPU's are a much harder market as gamers seem to be much more emotionally attached to their GPU than their CPU. That said, if AMD can start to pull away from Nvidia with chiplets, I can only see that loyalty lasting so long.

This is only based on Steam users aka gamers.

It doesn't include the average home or office setup.

Exactly who I was talking about, gamers, the ones that use Steam which is the subject of the thread. If AMD keep getting faster and overtake Nvidia with the chiplet approach by enough buyers will move to them, as they have done with CPU's. Just more inertia with GPU''s.

The amount of AMD gpu's still available to buy albeit at higher prices says it all really, not many people want them still despite them competing well against the 3000 series.
My son and daughter both have the reference RX6800 cards (MBA) and they work great (fast, cool, no crashes) whereas I have a RX5700XT (which occasionally seems to have driver issues with total war games like warhammer 2 and rome). I definitely want one of these RDNA2 cards (dont care about ray tracing as I cant notice any difference) - however if I could get a 3080 I wouldnt complain either. The next gen RDNA3 cards coming out late next year are meant to be even more stable (I dont know how that can be as the rx6800 doesnt seem to crash at all and my son and daughter really put the gpu through its paces everyday).

No actually they can't.

The only reason why 11900K is 8c16t is because they could no longer fit 10 cores due to the extra die space the new iGPU takes up.

Intel have already squeezed their 14nm+++++++ far beyond what it should have ever managed.
And if Intel scaled Tiger Lake H to a desktop socket they could easily double the core count.

So yes, technically Intel could make a desktop 16 core, they just didn't because 10nm yields are appalling hence the move to backport Willow Cove (10nm Tiger Lake) to 14nm and make Cypress Cove for Rocket Lake.
